NBA Lockout

This week NBA preseason games have been cancelled. How long will the lockout last?
Hopefully it can get sorted for a November start and not have a shortened season like 1999.

Top 10: Ashleigh Barty, Caroline Garcia, Jamie Hampton, Jelena Jankovic, Agnieszka Radwanska, Lucie Safarova, Maria Sharapova, Karolina Sprem, Sam Stosur, Jarmila Wolfe.

All time favourite: Anna Chakvetadze

Re: NBA Lockout

i luv the NBA so i'm trying to be patient. the owners staged this lockout to save themselves from each other. there are some real issues that need attention, namely the small vrs big market budget issues & franchise players "fleety" feet.

end may be in sight though (link). Roger Mason, players' executive committee member, tweeted its looking like a season. hope he's right 'cause i'm ready for some bball.

Re: NBA Lockout

I would be shocked if the lockout ended any time soon. The owners can't even agree on what they want, let alone come to the table with the players and bargain.

The owners want a hard cap to save themselves from themselves (look up the salaries of Gilbert Arenas or Elton Brand if you don't know what I'm talking about) and the players want nothing of it, let alone the 10% rollback of current salaries the owners want. I would be shocked if the season started before 2012 to be honest.

I hope they don't drag this out like the last one, cause it was the end of some careers even though they still played.

Like Vin baker comes to mind....and Shawn kemp. I think Derrik coleman and some others too, if i'm not mistaken.

They all got fat Now that I think about it Antoine walker was pretty athletic and had hops before that too.

Kemp was a train wreck waiting to happen, lockout or no. so much talent wasted.

the press has floated the leaked idea of an amnesty cut; basically teams can release one player & pay most of his salary w/o it counting under the cap. so ... perhaps again some careers will be adversely affected. pity 'cause as CANUCK & I have echoed, this affair is about owners saving themselves from each other.

Now that Mark Cuban has a title, maybe he can replace David Stern as Commissioner.

Re: NBA Lockout

If the season doesn't start for months or gets cancelled will the players play in Europe or elsewhere?

Patrick Mills is going to play in the NBL (Australia) and Australian teams are trying to sign Andrew Bogut.

A bunch of players have already signed with Euro teams or Asian Teams, they just have an opt out clause that will allow them out of the deal if the NBA gets going again.

Re: NBA Lockout

Deron Williams and Keynon Martin are amongst those to have headed overseas. I wonder if other big names will follow or wait for the lockout to end.

Except some players, who signed in China after their new regulations kicked in under which get out clauses aren't allowed.

If both sides are smart, then they'll find a compromise, because losing a season could do a lot of irrepairable damage to the league's popularity and reputation. Maybe they can find some sort of middle ground between the current salary cap regulations and the hard cap option, perhaps a flexible cap with more restrictions than at the moment. I read today about a possibility of a massive luxury tax increase.

No.

Cuban has great passion for the game. despite some of his shenanigans i wouldn't mind him as commissioner. doubt he'd go for it though, he's having too much fun with his little ponies.

got issues with Stern?

$$$ gives the bigger names the ability to wait it out. Kobe says he's considering it, but it comes across as more of a leverage play than real intent.

I also read today that the owners are willing to give up the hard cap and keep the same sorta cap they have now with just a higher luxury tax. I think this is a mistake as this will still allow the rich teams to "buy" their championships, unless the luxury tax is set at 5 - 1 for every dollar over, its not going to change anything.

I really do believe that the hard cap was the right move as it would have allowed all the teams to compete and it would have shown the GM's that know what they are doing as opposed to what we have now which are the GM's who have an endless supply of owner cash to spend vs the ones on a tight leash.

the owners have proposed four different levels of the luxury tax, with the tax increasing from a dollar-for-dollar levy on teams slightly above the luxury tax threshold (which was $70.307 million last season, when the Lakers, Magic and Mavericks were reportedly the only tax-paying teams), up to a 4-to-1 tax for teams that go more than $10-15 million over the threshold. There are also separate triggers for a 2-to-1 tax and a 3-to-1 tax.
http://sheridanhoops.com/

they can play with those solutions if they love labor disputes. local media $$$ create such disparity that the hard cap is the only way to go imo.

Re: NBA Lockout

Looks like the cancellation of the entire preseason is imminent and regular season games will start going down the drain as soon as next Monday. There is no progress in talks; both sides saying they'll meet again...sometime...?

The NBA will lose about $20 million from ditching the preseason.

Looks bleak overall.
