US TV execs are inept.

The quantity of 1 season cancellations is ludicrous. That top execs choices are so off the mark that they won't back a second season isn't a glowing report-card.

Re: US TV execs are inept.

The only shows I even caught a glimpse of out of that list were Outsourced (horrible, stereotypical) and Sarah Palin's Alaska, which, whether you're a fan of hers or not, was pretty captivating in it's content (nature) and production. But it included enough that it didn't need to go beyond it's 4-episode run.

Paul Reiser pushed the bounds of self-deprecation so far that it made no one even want to watch; no surprise there.

$#!+ My Dad Says was destined to fail, with a title like that.

Re: US TV execs are inept.

I watched it once (Dad) and found it painfully not funny.

The problem is that sitcoms and dramas esp. are expensive to produce and if they don't find their legs immediately viewers have too many other choices to move on to.

The old days, when you only had a few networks and you could experiment with moving a show around and wait for it to find an audience are long gone, which is sad in many cases because that does kill off a lot of good programming. But you can't just blame the TV execs. They're looking at their numbers and their revenues, and if crap like "American Idol" and "Wipeout" is what WE'RE (as a whole) watching, they're going to pull the trigger.

Re: US TV execs are inept.

1. Calling American television executives inept is like calling water wet.

2. If all the aforementioned shows were only good enough to last one season or less, one can only imagine how bad the pilots were that didn't make the cut.

Love Summer Glau, but The Cape was terrible IMO (though I only watched one episode and a half).

First of all this thread isn't based in my thinking that all, or even most, of these were good shows. Which is part of my point - "my Dad Says" and "Breaking in" were so obviously horrible it boggles my mind that they could have been aired in the first place. It was inept to green-light them.

IMO most of the responsibility for the sorry state of affairs does lie with the TV execs. All the decisions are in their hands. From what shows to consider, to what to air, to what slot to air them in, to what shows to keep/cancel. As a rule, most of them are cowardly business people attempting to squeeze more out of an outdated financial and programming model. They continue to pay homage to the Nielsen ratings which clearly are a farce. However, they are known and the companies that buy ads pay attention to them so the TV execs are too wussy to take a stand and think outside the box.

The days that shows were grown are gone in great part due to the temperament of those who head up the TV networks. Nowadays, thanks to buy-outs, mergers and a focus on ever-increasing profits, they're a bunch of business school produced, bean-counting wussies who lack both fortitude and vision. In fact, for many of them the shows are incidental. They really aren't TV execs so much as financial and logistics people who happen to work in the TV industry.

As for the viewing public - maybe. A lot of people who'd support "good" shows don't bother with TV anymore because of all the crap (not to mention 15 minutes of ads for each 45 minutes of a show)that's on. Add ii that the ratings are, as I mentioned above, flawed and it becomes tricky to gauge what the viewing public is really doing. Plus TV is what helped condition the taste of many in the first place. Continuing to focus more and more on finding the supposed lcd and catering to it is going to have diminishing returns.

It doesn't work like that. Part of being an inept exec is passing by the fertile ground (either commercially or artistically) and tilling the barren.

Re: US TV execs are inept.

All those shows should have been cancelled. The ratings were bad for all of them, except for Breaking In which has the asterisk since it was after American Idol. It was losing way too much of its lead-in AKA crap.
