Moving!

Hey guys.

So basically its been set in my mind now, that I really wanna live in a different country for a year. I love Australia, but I have always wanted to live somewhere else for a period of time.

I have narrowed it down to either england, or canada. And I was just wondering if you guys would be able to give me any advice on which option you think I should take?

Also, which suburbs or cities within these countries would be ideal?

Re: Moving!

That depends. What will you doing in the country you'll move to? Studying? Working? Travelling? Are you looking to move here permanently or just for a temporary basis and if so, how long for? If you are working or studying, what fields interest you and what are you skilled at? What's your money situation like right now? Would you have enough money to rent in a city area? Sorry, but I can't give you that much help unless you give me more details.

Re: Moving!

I wanna stay there for around a year. not looking to study. just looking to work, so i can afford an apartment and stuff. Im mainly doing it just to like experience another part of the world. and hopefully grow as a a person.

Id probably be looking for admin work. I currently work in a hospital as an admin officer, so something similar to that would be ideal.

Money-wise, im doing pretty good at the moment. I could afford a city apartment here in Australia, but I guess it depends on what sort of income I can gain over there as to what I can afford.

thanks heaps!

Re: Moving!

Without Uni qualifications, I think you'll find it hard to get a job here (UK), because a large amount of employers have those as basic criteria. If you do find anything, unfortunately it will be fairly bottom-of-the-barrel stuff and probably won't get you much over Ł15,000 a year (practically nothing if you plan on living in a big city like London where rents are sky-high). Also, unemployment is about 8% here right now so the jobs market is very competitive right now, so you have to make sure you stand out from the crowd as well.

I don't know about what requirements there are for people who work in admin over here, but again I'll think you find acquiring any employment here hard right now. If you don't mind me asking, how much (roughly) do you spend on rent every month?

Re: Moving!

yeah I thought that could be the case. I was looking at places like birmingham and eastbourne and stuff as well. they would be cheaper than london right?

most admin work over here doesnt require qualifications, which is good. I spend $300 a week on rent. that is in AUD dollars. So about $1,200.

Re: Moving!

London rents are astronomical unless you live right in the inconvenient outskirts or in some grotty hole, so it's good that you're looking at other places. I've never been to Birmingham before but as it's a big city I'd imagine you'd be in a similar situation rent-wise to London and most people tend to be quite derogatory towards it as a place to live. It doesn't have a good reputation here. I wouldn't recommend Eastbourne, either, just because it isn't a very 'young' city.

If you were moving here, the cities/towns I would recommend would be Brighton (still quite expensive, but nice), Leeds, Bath, certain bits of Manchester, York, Oxford, Cambridge and also Edinburgh and Cardiff are very nice in my experience, too. It might also be worth exploring some smaller towns if you're interested in getting more of a change of scene from Brisbane.

From my own experience, I would avoid: Newcastle and the North East (hardest to find work), Portsmouth, Plymouth, Hull, Slough (My God, stay away from there), Leicester, Stoke and Milton Keynes.

Re: Moving!

It's not set in concrete. It's just something that I would love to do.
So now I'm just researching, to see if it would be possible.

to be completely honest, I didn't think not having a uni qualification would be such a huge deal, as here in Australia. there are so many good paying jobs you can work in, without any sort of qualification.

That's why I'm asking aroun though, just so see if it's possible

Re: Moving!

In fairness, the majority of British cities are fairly shit. Why do you want to come here?

Re: Moving!

I've always though the UK was really interesting and diverse. but one of the main reasons, is there is a good attempt set up for young Australians who work in the uk. so I guess that played a big role.

You won't find that in Canada. Expect to be paid minimum salary, which is very low, between 7 $ and 10 $ an hour. A little more if you're lucky.

That kind of salary won't be enough for a decent appartment in most big cities. So you'll have to rent a room, or to find roommates.
