Chicago

Can anyone tell me about Chicago as a city?

In particular, I'm curious about gay life, and how the scene is like for Asians.

A single flow'r he sent me, since we met./All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet - One perfect rose.
I knew the language of the floweret;/'My fragile leaves,' it said, 'his heart enclose.'
Love long has taken for his amulet/One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet/One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get/One perfect rose.

Re: Philadelphia

So, after all that worrying and complaining about grad school, you got into UPenn?

Re: Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a very vibrant city, particularly downtown. Center City and University City are two of the most dense and lively neighborhoods of any city in the country, day and night. You can walk to just about anything and a car would not be necessary at all. If you are gay or asian you won't have any problems finding similar people and things to do in those neighborhoods. There have been some problems between the black and asian communities in North Philly and at public schools but they're in areas that you likely wouldn't be going to or living near. The negative of Philly is that there is still a significant amount of crime in many neighborhoods but the downtown areas are generally very safe.

Don't know much specifically about gay life but the "gayborhood" is generally considered to be a part of the Washington Square West neighborhood which is between 7th and broad streets and walnut and south streets. For Asians, there are a large percentage of Asians that live in University City and obviously there are a lot of Asian restaurants in Chinatown which is a part of Center City. Now, a lot of the Asian immigrants are moving to South Philly which has a lot of nice neighborhoods east of Broad Street.

Re: Philadelphia

The anti-Asian school violence occurred in South Philly.

Philadelphia is nice enough. Not a "wow" city, but certainly better than a lot of other urban areas in the country. Philadelphia is actually growing and becoming more vibrant, unlike most cities in the Northeast/Midwest of the country.

Are you sure you don't mean North Philly? South Philly has some bad areas west of broad but south philly east of broad street has some of the better city neighborhoods in the country. Philly's an interesting city because it has some of the best urban neighborhoods in the country and some of the worst, it's all about knowing where to go.

Chicago I love. Great city, especially downtown on the Miracle Mile. Very vibrant. Good music scene. And some really good BBQ Joints
