NEED Charity suggestions for small business...

I am opening my very own small business (selling my handmade stuff online)( YAY!! ) but i need a charity or cause to have as my stores main charity. i would like $1-$2 dollars of every product sold to go to the charity. donations will go out in bulk once or twice a month.

but the question is WHAT CHARITY?

here are the requirements:

a LEAST 95˘ of every dollar must go directly to the cause, i.e. administration costs must be very low.

a gift that keeps on giving. the charity must have some multiplying effect. it must be something that gives for a long time, saves lives or multiplies so that my clients get a bigger bang for their buck.

must not be scammy

must not be controversial. i love a good controversy my clients will not. so no planned parenthood, no operation rescue, no gop, no dnc.

must accept donations in any amount as the donations will be different every month.

must be long term. ie. not for japan

so far the top pick is:

Be K.I.N.D. to a student in Malawi. Donate a desk.

Every day, millions of children throughout Africa struggle to learn while sitting on the floor or on the ground outdoors. Giving them a desk, where they can write and concentrate, is the first step towards creating an educational system that attracts, and keeps, eager young students.

Join the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and MSNBC's "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell" in an ambitious campaign called K.I.N.D.: Kids in Need of Desks to provide 46,000 desks for 172 schools in UNICEF Malawi’s Schools for Africa network.

By making a tax-deductible donation to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF today, you can pick one or more students up off the ground and help pave their way to a better education and brighter future.

Re: NEED Charity suggestions for small business...

Maybe you could make donations for Japan atm? In high school I started learning how to do stencils for T-shirts and I was selling them around school when I learned of the genocide in Darfur and I started making T-Shirts with slogans about Darfur and empowering images and not only did they sell like hotcakes around school and town, but I donated 50% of all my profits (around $450) to an aid organization. Donating most of the money ultimitely ended my buisness cause I sepnt the other half of the money on buying supplies. It's fun to do for a while, but it's really time consuming but if it's for a good cause, then more power to you.

And here you are, a black unicorn.
Mythical and mystical since the day that you were born.

Re: NEED Charity suggestions for small business...

Medical Teams International has been one I have donated to for many years. They used to be called Northwest Medical Teams, and are based in Portland, Oregon. In recent years, they have joined with other partners and are now a global organization.

They are always very quick to respond to any disaster by sending doctors, nurses, medical supplies etc. Many Oregon and Washington doctors and nurses volunteer with them. They also provide free dental clinics in US. Plus, they have many other programs worldwide (currently in 28 countries).

Their administration costs are less than 2%, so 98% of the contributions go directly toward the services and programs. All their financials are available on the website.

They are an organization based on Christian values, though, so not sure if that suits you. However, they are not affiliated with any church or denomination. They are an independent nonprofit organization, and they help everyone in need.

Asking for suggestions for a charity seems rather an odd request. I see it as a rather personal choice myself. One that you feel drawn too.

Of course, BUT and this is a big BUT, in asking people about charities, I am hoping to learn about new charities or ones that have been around for ages that I did not previously know about. I asked a friend about this weeks ago and that's how I found out about K.I.N.D., kids in need of desks. I want to make sure that I am doing the best for my customers by finding out as much as I can about available options.

Lastly, I want to make triple sure that there are no issues with the charities of my choice. It's this way that I found out about some problems with the red cross.
