Travel Help Update - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, AND RUSSIA

I'm planning to visit Estonia,Latvia and Lithuania this March and April..however I got a few problems:

I'm planning to start at Lithuania and then Latvia, then to Tallinn, if possible I might go to Helsinki as well. Is this a good idea?

Is Riga enough to see Latvia, any small cities around Riga that are worth going(This question applies to all three cities)?

and If I can only go to one place in Lithuania, Kaunas or Vilnius? On Paper Kaunas looks more interesting(and possibly I can get direct flight from London)

Almost forgot. If I am going there for 2 weeks. 3 days for each city. Will that be enough?

Big Kudos to all fellow TFers for answering my questions

Hey! I lived in Estonia and have been quite a few times to all countries, so will gladly help out. First of all, I wouldn't go to Helsinki, you'll have a busy schedule just seeing the Baltics alone, and there are more interesting places than Helsinki to be honest.

As for Latvia, you have to go see Ventspils at least as well, and there's Jurmala by the beach which could be fun, and also check out Liepaja.

If you only want to see 1 place in Lithuania (which you shouldn't do), go go Vilnius. Kaunas is really nice aswell, but the old town of Vilnius is gorgeous. But you should also go to the beach side in Lithuania. Klaipeda and Palanga are well worth the visit.

And try to go longer than 2 weeks, hehe. In Estonia there's, besides the drop dead gorgeous Tallinn, Pärnu to see, Viljandi is fun, Tartu is a must (that's where I lived), Kuressaare, Haapsalu is nice and Narva is interesting aswell. You should check out these cities and see what looks most interesting to you.

If you need any help feel free to pm me!

I'm all alone with my delusions

Re: Travel Help - Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia

It sounds like a good plan
Honestly, Baltic towns are small, I think in Tallinn all the sightseeing can be done in one day and other places are even smaller. So I wouldn't actually mind going to Helsinki but well, I love Helsinki and I live in Estonia so it's hard to put myself in tourist's shoes
I can also help when it comes to Estonia if you need

Whatever you do now,
the world still turns.

As far as sightseeing goes Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius is a must. 3 Capitals with somewhat same backround but then again all so completely different.

Have been in all of them and seriously beautiful . (Well actually lived all my life in Tallinn) Now as for other places to see i agree with Geertvg on the whole tour.

Unlike him though I wouldn't rule out Helsinki if you have the time itself. It takes so little time to get from Tallink to Helsinki itself.

Good luck Kaia and Anett in 2014.
Also Wozniacki, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Stosur, Gajdosova and K-Kookie!!

If you go outside of Tallinn, you might suffer with foreign languages. Young people ofcourse speak either English or German but with older people you might not be able to communicate.

Good luck Kaia and Anett in 2014.

Re: Travel Help Update - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, AND RUSSIA

I really want to visit Tartu but at the end of the day I just scrapped it. So it is:

Kaunas -> Vilnius -> (Siauliai?) -> Riga -> Tallinn <-> St. Petersburg

After comparing how much money I will be spending in Helsinki(wow, what an expensive city) and in St. Petersburg. I decided that I would travel by overnight coach to St. Petersburg and spend 3 nights over there.

It will be my first time in Russia So excited cause it must be a brand-new experience
Any good place to visit around St. Petersburg?

st petersburg should be good. i planned a trip around this region back in 2008 and got a lot of info put together, but then scrapped it and spent some time in lapland instead, so i can't say much except that it seems you will need several days for it.

i was in tallinn and i disagree that 1 day is enough, but 2 should suffice easily. i also visited tartu, it really is just a day trip from tallinn. just get up early and get on a bus and return in the evening. it's nice, but you can see most things within a few hours. i think you should try to see some places outside of the cities as well, though.

^I will spend 2 nights in Tallinn. I got 13 nights. I spend one in Kaunas, 3 in Vilnius, 2 in Riga, 2 nights on coaches to and back from St. Petersburg, another 3 nights in St. Petersburg, 2 in Tallinn.

I should have spent one more week but I have to get back to England to finish my essay work.
I am bummed I missed Helsinki because Suomenlinna Fortress looks amazing.
