More than 20 years later, missing NY baby is found

NEW YORK -More than two decades ago, a newborn sick with fever was snatched from a New York City hospital, her frantic mother returning to the emergency room to find an empty crib. On Wednesday, police said the baby — now a woman — has been found.

Carlina White was just 19 days old when she disappeared from Harlem Hospital on Aug. 4, 1987. Police searched for her kidnappers but never found enough evidence to charge any suspects. Her mother, Joy White, always had a feeling that her baby was alive, her family said.

On Jan. 4, a woman known as Nejdra Nance, who was raised in Bridgeport, Conn., and now lives in Atlanta, contacted White, sending along baby photos that looked nearly identical to shots of Carlina posted on a missing children's website. Nance told White she thought she may be her daughter.

"She said she just had a feeling, she felt different from the people raising her," said Nance's maternal grandmother, Elizabeth White, 71. "She searched, and then she found Joy."

Joy White contacted the New York Police Department to see if it could help investigate whether the woman was really Carlina White.

"It sounded legitimate and credible, so I had missing persons reach out to her," said Detective Martin Brown, who fielded the call. DNA tests performed on Joy White, her ex-husband, Carl Tyson, and 23-year-old Nance matched, police said. Nejdra Nance was Carlina White.

As part of their investigation, police are talking to retired detectives who handled the case years ago. Because she was so young when she was kidnapped, it's impossible for Nance to know if she has lived with the same family the entire time.

Nance was on her way back to New York from Atlanta on Wednesday, said Elizabeth White, and Joy White was en route to the airport to meet her. But they already reunited once recently, when Nance came to New York with her 5-year-old daughter, Samani.

"It was wonderful, she didn't even seem like a stranger, she just fit right in," Elizabeth White said. "We all went up there, we had dinner together, her aunts were there. She brought her beautiful daughter. It was magic."

Elizabeth White said she didn't ask Nance too many questions about how she grew up or how she knew she was not a member of the family with whom she lived. She didn't want to push Nance too much.

"That will all come," Elizabeth White said of the history. "What's important now is our baby girl is home. She's home."

Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I'm not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.

thats amazing and scary!

Source: Suspect in 1987 kidnapping surrenders to police
By the CNN Wire Staff

New York (CNN) -- A woman suspected of snatching an infant from a New York hospital in 1987 was in custody Sunday after surrendering to police in Connecticut, a law enforcement source said.

Ann Pettway was arrested after she contacted a Bridgeport, Connecticut, police officer via Facebook from Stratford, Connecticut, the source said.

Bridgeport police spokesman Detective Keith Bryant would not comment on the report.

Earlier, Bryant told reporters that Pettway was spotted at a pawnshop in Bridgeport on Saturday She was seen at Joe David Pawnbroker at about noon Saturday, he said, and asked about pawning jewelry. She wasn't happy with the amount the pawnshop offered for the jewelry and left, spending about two minutes in the store, Bryant said.

Pettway was on foot and alone, wearing a dark coat and hat, he said.

A store employee called police after recognizing the woman from news reports, Bryant said. "By the time our officers arrived, she was gone. They canvassed the area and didn't find her."

Authorities used surveillance video from the store to confirm the woman was Pettway. "Based on that video and what we have in the database, it's her," he said. "They're 100% sure."

Asked about the sighting, FBI spokesman William Reiner refused comment.

A warrant was issued Friday in North Carolina for Pettway's arrest. She is suspected in the abduction of Carlina Renae White. After 23 years, White tracked down her real mother earlier this month, saying she had had a nagging feeling all her life that she was brought up by a family she didn't belong to.

The North Carolina warrant seeks Pettway's arrest for allegedly violating her two-year probation sentence on attempted embezzlement charges, said North Carolina Department of Corrections spokeswoman Pamela Walker.

"As part of her probation, she must seek permission to leave the state of North Carolina," Walker said. "At this time, no such request has been made."

However, if Pettway is arrested and charged with White's kidnapping, she would likely be prosecuted at the federal level. No federal warrant has been issued for her.

White's mother, Joy White, told the New York Post last week that she last saw her daughter when she was 19 days old. She took her to a Harlem hospital on August 4, 1987, because the baby had a high fever, a New York police official said. Carlina was admitted to the hospital, and her mother went home to rest. When she returned, the baby was gone.

"That was a big part of my heart that was just ripped apart," Carlina White's biological father, Carl Tyson, told the Post regarding her disappearance.

Carlina White told the Post that Pettway raised her. Pettway was pregnant in 1987, she said, but lost the baby.

"Nobody knew because she was pregnant and came back with me," White said. "She had something set up."

Carlina White was raised under a different name, but always felt she did not belong to the family, said Ernie Allen, president and CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Her suspicions grew after the woman who raised her could not produce a birth certificate for her.

"I just started typing in Yahoo and Google different articles -- anything that pulled up in 1987 with any child that went missing -- and I came across the article, and the baby picture just struck me because ... it looked like my daughter," Carlina White, who has a 5-year-old daughter, told the Post. "I swear I stayed on that article for like a good two hours."

On January 4, Joy White's phone rang. The woman on the other end said she was Carlina, and sent a picture taken in 1987 in which she bore a striking resemblance to a baby picture Joy White had held on to. A DNA test proved the link.

The family has since been joyously reunited. "This is what I wanted ever since I found out that lady wasn't my biological mother," Carlina White told the Post. "I just hope that the officials will be able to get her in their hands so we could just hear her side of the story now."

Her biological family, meanwhile, wants justice.

"I want her to go to jail ... for what she did and what she did to my family," said Lisa White-Heatley, Joy White's sister. "She destroyed my family."

CNN's Susan Candiotti and Nina Golgowski contributed to this report

I just saw on facebook that a friend of mine from Conneticut knows the woman that kidnapped the baby. I called him and he said that the woman was always real strange and that he use to buy candy for the young lady when she was young. He said that the woman is from a huge family and that according to our norms she was born into incest. Her mother supposedly married her cousin but in a lot of societies that is acceptable. My friend said that the mom use to hang around with a lot of drug dealers that carried guns and all kinds of nonsense around that little girl. He didn't realize that she had turned herself in but said that if any money was involved that her family would turn her in.

I hope this young lady will be able to overcome what she's been through.

Small world isn't it.

Damn.

Too bad an innocent baby had to suffer from this craziness. Glad she found her family though.

Thanks for the scoop.
