Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day to all! Add your favorite MLK quotes

Lots of the values and interactions we now take for granted were catalyzed by the activism of MLK and those who aligned with him. I, for one, am very grateful.

Some of his quotes that spark to me

'Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.... Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.' –Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community

“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.” –Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech

“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.” –Strength to Love

“The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human and, therefore, brothers." –Strength to Love

"Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase."

Add your own favorite MLK quotes

Mulder: "So you're agreeing with me?"
Scully "No! You're bat-crap crazy."

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. - Martin Luther King, Jr.

"History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. "

"How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. To put it in the terms of St. Thomas Aquinas: An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law. Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust."

- from "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" 16 April 1963

"I have a dream, that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

I presume and hope that Dr. King meant all kids (and adults) whatever their ethnicity.

If you have to question that, you know nothing about the man.

Even in a thread this innocuous, you cant help but be a demagogue, as usual. Youre disgusting.

Anyway, my favorite quote is from the Ive Been to the Mountaintop Speech, describing what had happened after being stabbed at a booksigning:

"I had received one from the President and the Vice-President. I've forgotten what those telegrams said. I'd received a visit and a letter from the Governor of New York, but I've forgotten what that letter said. But there was another letter that came from a little girl, a young girl who was a student at the White Plains High School. And I looked at that letter, and I'll never forget it. It said simply,
Dear Dr. King,

I am a ninth-grade student at the White Plains High School."

And she said,
While it should not matter, I would like to mention that I'm a white girl. I read in the paper of your misfortune, and of your suffering. And I read that if you had sneezed, you would have died. And I'm simply writing you to say that I'm so happy that you didn't sneeze.

I was not questioning Dr. King, but how some posters here seem to interpret those words.

You can't beat that one.

Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I'm not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.

Happy MLK day. I can't believe how many years I studied on him and the civil rights movement.

Had a "contemporary figure" like lets say Jay Z said even a small fraction of what Dr. King did on civil rights, there'd probably be ova a hundred replies.
