Romania Trip

This summer, a couple of friends and I are possibly thinking of going on a trip to Romania. We went last year but we only went round Bucharest and we didn't explore any other towns or cities. Does anybody know any nice places in Romania which are good for tourists? We're looking for something with a bit of culture and nightlife but where the people are also pretty friendly.

ugh.

Re: Romania Trip

Oh, I lived there for many years.
You should go to Sibiu for sure!! It's an old, German-influenced city not that far from Bucharest, really beautiful Same is Brasov, it's really great (I particularly enjoyed it in winter though! )
Sighisoara is a tower-city which I also liked

Moldova has amazing places though. I've been there just once, but the nature and churches there are breathtaking! Keep in mind this is the Romanian Moldova It's a part of Romania, not the country. Though it's a bit too far from Bucharest. If you guys have time/money though, it's definitely worth it.
There is nothing really to see in Bucharest IMO.. A couple of days is more than enough unless you're into exploring all kinds of museums and stuff.

Constanţa you mean. It's nice, old town with nice (ancient) architecture, nowadays industry port on the Black Sea.

Braşov is an amazing city. It's in the centre which makes it a great starting point if you want to see more of Romania. Really beautiful centre with lots to see.

Moldova as mentioned in the northeast (Iaşi region) is also worth a visit.

Have fun

If I went to Romania, I'd want to go to Deva but that's because I'm such a gymnastics nut.

Romanian gymnasts weren't as solid as they used to be back in the 90s.

Re: Romania Trip

Yeah, the Dracula castle is definitely overrated. You really don't get to see anything that interesting.
Constanta is usually good for a weekend as it's quite close to Bucharest, but I'd put it pretty low on my to-visit list.

@Vanity Bonfire: this is my advice

1. First go to Brasov from there you can go to Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle ), Peles (and Pelisor) Castle and Rasnov. Both of them are very close to Brasov. And also you can see the Sfinxul

Peles Castle

Brasov

Bran Castle

Rasnov

Sfinxul

2. From Brasov go to Sighişoara Citadel

3. from there you can go in Bucovia via Bicaz Canyon (it' very beautiful there) to see the painted monasteries of Bucovina

Bicaz

Putna Monestary

4. From there you can go to Maramures via the Borgo Pass (and see Vatra Dornei - there you can drink mineral water straight from springs and it's a very nice ski resort) or through Prislop Pass (it's shorter and very beautiful). In Maramures you can see the Wooden Churches (of Maramures) and the Marry Cemetery. Also this county is the most traditional off all, people still wear traditional chloths and so on..

Prislop Pass

Traditional Clothes from Maramures (winter edition )

5. From Maramures go to Cluj Napoca
6. From Cluj you can go to Timisoara (the City were the Romanian Revolution of 89 started, also a very beautiful city )

7. From Timisoara to Corvinesti Castle and and to Orastie Mountains (to see the old Dacian Capital of Sarmisegetusa)

Sarmizegetusa Regia

8. From there in Sibiu (European Capital of Culture in 2007)
Sibiu

9. From Sibiu go to Bucharest via the Transfagarasan road (it's open only around 6 months per year, bacause of havy snows and avalanches). If the road isn't open go to Brasov and from there to Bucharest. Somewhere along this road are the ruins of Poenari Castle - Vlad Dracula The Impaler's Castle. Unfortunatly the castle was destroyed by the turks and it's not much to see...

You can also go to the Black Sea resorts and to the Danube Delta
Or to the muddy volcanoes in Buzau (are unique in Europe)
And If you have time go to see Decebalus Rex's statue on the Danube (the larges rock sculpture in Europe)

Muddy vulcanoes

Decebalus Rex statue

Your jurney should look like this one (this depends if you take the train/car/bus/plane)
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/9...rtaromania.jpg

(if you take the train go only with Inter-City's or "Rapid" don't go with Personal because these trains make stops in every villages some of these villages are not even on maps so it will take ages to reach your destination )
