Stranger accused of slapping crying child at store

Okay....I'll admit that there are some crying kids that I've wanted to slap, but this is absolutely crazy.

Stranger accused of slapping crying child at store

Published: 9/2/09, 7:25 PM EDT

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) - Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a suburban Atlanta Walmart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.

A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."
Authorities say Stephens then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her. The child began screaming and Stephens was arrested. Police say an examination showed the girl's face was slightly red.

A call to the girl's mother, identified in the police report as Sonya Mathews of Grayson, was answered by a woman who identified herself as Sabrina Mathis, the victim's aunt.

Mathis said Wednesday that the girl is doing fine.

"As of today, she has really forgotten about it," Mathis said. "She's been playing."

Mathis said the girl's mother was shaken up over the incident.

"She's as well as to be expected," Mathis said. "Right now she's just trying to calm down."

I have CDO. It's like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, except in alphabetical order like it should be.

He probably tapped her lightly. Granted, if it were my kid I'd have gone bonkers, but really, if you cant keep your kid under control don't bring them out. My parents never took me or my sister out shopping for groceries or anything till I was at least 5 and capable of understanding that when my mom said we'd get spanking, she meant it. And I remember this clearly cuz when I was around that age, my mom took us shopping and my sister and I totally went beserk! My mom grabbed us both, drove home, dropped us at the babysitter and went back shopping!

even if he gently tapped her, he had no right to touch that child at all.

I didn't say he did. In fact, I agree, he had no right at all, hence, the "I'd have bonkers" comment. What I was implying is that I understand his position.

i think everyone does. a kid is crying and you wanna smack them or their parent to make them be quiet. but you dont actually do it.

Re: Stranger accused of slapping crying child at store

If the child was like, seven years old, it'd be just a little bit more justified. But a 2 year old doesn't have much of a clue of whats going on. The man is stupid for slapping a kid he doesn't know.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

He shouldn't have done that but some adults are clueless about raising kids too.

Re: Stranger accused of slapping crying child at store

slapping the child was definitely wrong. i think he should have slapped the MOTHER. parents who taken their broken condoms children out and have no control over them piss me off.

plus he likely gave the girl a few light taps. what he did was illegal and he should face the punishment, but i would be lying if i have never wanted to slap the PARENT of a crying child.

Oh I don't condone violence. However, nobody, and I repeat nobody has the right to lay a hand on me or anyone related to me

Are you fucking kidding me?! This is a two-year old KID. Parents cannot always control whether there YOUNG children are crying, and the kid has no real control over what she's doing.

And its really disgusting you insinuate that because the mother couldn't stop her kid from crying, she was a mistake/unwanted kid. Grow up, since you clearly haven't already.

No one cares if you've wanted to slap another parent's kid, the distinction is between wanting to do something, and actually doing it.
