Question about FaceBook.

When you get an account, how the hell does it know who to suggest as your "friends"? I set up a new account without using my name, and fb suggested "friends" for me who I haven't talked to in years. Does fb search through your email account and kinda searches your contact list?

This is creeping me out.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

It can be:
The uni/workplace where you are/were.
The friend it introduces are also friends with some of your friends in the list.
You could also set it to search through your MSN/email list to find people who are on FB.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

It's weird because I didn't give fb any of my personal info, though. I guess my email addy was enough. Does it search through the contact list of my email?

Re: Question about FaceBook.

It wouldn't, unless you provided a password for them.
That's how I thought it used to work, unless they've changed it.
They normally wouldn't have access to your MSN/whatever contact list unless you gave it to them.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

Your friends might also have had 'introduced' you (to some of their friends) who are also people you know.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

Facebook suggests many friends for me too, it's usually just people in your networks with friends in common.
Not too sinister, I hope.

That's right.
It usually suggests the contacts you have in the email account you gave.

Yes it does. Same thing happened to me so I know the feeling.

Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I'm not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

Well I have no contacts in the email address I gave and it suggests to me plenty of friends. So I would question that it can search your e-mail addresses without more concrete proof.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

have you ever sent an e-mail to a friend with that addy.

Facebook is pretty intrusive anyway, but it does feel weird to see some people they aren't supposed to know you know on the page.

maybe they can even link this e-mail to your other accounts or something.

Maybe they have some agents hidden in the fridge.

to new beginnings.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

If someone has your email in their address book, you get connected to them, if for example they do a search. People you have FB friends in common are also suggested.

No.

Geez, you're still a bigggg Fraidy cat of the internet I see.

Why would you want to set up a facebook account without your information? the whole purpose of the site is for people to be able to find you?

Oh please, at least you know them!! I got a suggestions for some guy living in Egypt, who has four friends, none of which I know. I also get stupid Facebook Page suggestions such as 'Playdays', 'Jonas Brothers' and 'Dizzee Rascal'.

Facebook knows me so well

Re: Question about FaceBook.

oh and some of your friends probably sent you an invitation to FB so when you joined with your email they automatically knew you were 'attached' to certain people.

Re: Question about FaceBook.

It just looks at your friends' friends and see if they have any in common and then suggest them to you.

Naturally, I ignore it - if I wanted someone to add me, they'd have added me already.
