Suggestions for cars under US $20K?

I'm looking at the following:

1. Scion tC

2. Hyundai Accent

3. Honda Fit

4. Toyota Matrix

5. Volkswagen Jetta S

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated

I looked at Yaris, but the shape is a bit too boxy and odd for me.. 40 MPG is a lot for a non-hybrid

Anyway Toyota is low on inventory because of cash for clunkers.

From reading your other thread, you might want to look at getting a tank!

I love the Kia Soul. It's so cute, especially with the little mice driving it.

I'm insanely loyal to VWs, so of course I'm going to say the Jetta. But you might want to look at a Focus or Fiesta if you want go domestic.

On your list, I have a friend who has a Matrix and she's very pleased with it.

The Fit is a neat little ride, but from what I've read it might be worth considering moving up to a Civic if you can swing it, which I think you can if the Jetta and Matrix are on your list. Seems the gain in space and safety is worth it.

Get something you don't mind wrecking in a first week or so. If your driving test thread is anything to go by, you won't have that car for long.

Rave reviews in Car and Driver and most other car mags. VW engines tend to be bulletproof. But the electronics can be wonky.

My car (Passat) is a 2000 and it's been a great car. Check Consumer Reports I guess.

My unsubstantiated theory is that VWs that are screwed together in Germany tend to hold up better than ones from Eastern Europe or Mexico. The evidence is anecdotal, based on the experience of myself and a few fellow VW owners in the Dallas area.

I love the performance, handling and feel of VWs, but you do pay a little more than you would for the equivalent Japanese or American car for repairs and maintenance. If you enjoy driving and drive a lot, it's probably worth it. If you think of a car as an appliance that goes from A to B, it's not. That's my two cents. And I do have a VW bias.

Anyway, I have to mention Lena's bangs now.
