Making a left turn (USA)

Okay, so my friend took me out on the road today. And I had road rage having driven on small roads three times before this. He finally let me drive on the big roads and he got really, really, upset when I made left turns.

For instance, when making a left turn, I would not slow down (only a little), so I end up almost hitting the pathway when turning in. When stopping as well, I tend not to focus on the car in front of me, and I end up having to break of all a sudden. I also have a tendency to hit the lines on the right side of my lane or even the pathway - I think this stems from the problem that as the driver you want to be in the middle of the road, so you tend to swerve to the right.

Are there any tips to fix these problems before my test on Saturday? My friend thinks that it'll be a miracle if I pass... Sorry if I don't make too much sense but I'm really tired...

Practice! But practice away from other cars and people.

When you make a turn, take your foot off the pedal! Brace your foot on the brake, but do not press down hard. You are not supposed to accelerate, AT ALL! If you are at a full stop and making a left turn, gently roll into the turn. There is no reward for doing it the fastest way. Turn into the nearest lane. (For instance, if you are making a left, you turn into the most left lane.) Let the wheel return to its proper position on its own -- do not try to turn the wheel into position.

Oh and PRACTICE. Some people, like me , are naturals at driving and don't need much practice. But then there are people who need lots of time and practice -- which is fine! Put in the effort.

Actually I had the same problems with staying centered and stopping when I first started, but I dunno why you are having such difficulties with left turns. Like ITZ said, these things will go away with practice. Just when you are more experienced, always remember to pay complete attention to the road! I made the mistake of getting too complacent, and rear-ended a car on the highway. It was not worth the two seconds of taking my eyes off the road.

Re: Making a left turn (USA)

If you're going too fast around left turns and braking too suddenly, the advice I would give you is to go more slowly around left turns and brake sooner
