Text drive film to 'shock' pupils ( shocking content )

VID INSIDE
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/8203120.stm

A shocking video has been made for pupils in an attempt to stop car crashes caused by the driver texting while driving.

The short film, starring young actors from south Wales, shows a teenage girl killing four people after she uses her mobile phone to send a text.

Gwent Police said it hoped the graphic video would be shown in schools around Wales and hopefully the rest of the UK.

Research has shown texting while driving slows reaction time by 35%.

The film by Peter Watkins-Hughes has also been posted on video sharing website You Tube.

It shows in slow motion a crash caused after a girl, called Cassie, briefly loses concentration of the road while looking at her mobile.

It also includes footage of all the emergency services attending the crash scene, including the air ambulance and firefighters.

I hope that after watching this film motorists will think twice before picking up their mobile phone when behind the wheel

Ch Insp John Pavett
Gwent Police said it "facilitated" the crash between two cars in a bid to prevent future accidents caused by all people, but particularly young and new drivers.

Lyn Samuel, Gwent Police's school liaison coordinator, said the film was a "very impactive road safety educational tool to help reduce the number of collisions involving young drivers across Wales".

Ch Insp John Pavett from Gwent Police Roads Policing Unit said texting and driving was happening on roads all over the country, despite the fact it is illegal.

He said: "I hope that after watching this film motorists will think twice before picking up their mobile phone when behind the wheel and realise that a quick reply to a text message or answering a phone call is never worth putting theirs and other people's lives at risk."

Recent RAC Foundation research showed reaction times slowed by 35% when 17 to 24-year-olds drove while reading and writing text messages.

And its research last year showed that texting while driving impairs motorists more than being under the influence of drink or drugs.

It said nearly 50% of drivers aged between 18 and 24 texted while driving.

As well as reaction times being slower, it said texters often drifted out of lanes, had poorer steering control and the overall driving performance was poor.

Drivers face a Ł60 fine and three penalty points on their licence for using hand-held mobile phones.

This vid is just great
I think it makes us all realize texting/calling while driving can be deadly. Still lots of people tend to do it

Really impressive vid with some shocking content, but i think everyone should watch it.
What makes me mad is that i have never seen such a vid on tv or on school, in my country It may be shocking but it's going to prevent deaths

I wonder how they can make it look very real.

That video was horrible. I'm normally okay with watching the anti-DUI adverts and the speeding adverts, they are no doubt effective, but jeez that was something else.

I haven't seen it but I completely agree. Accidents can be deadly and is completely unnecessary. I lost a very close cousin in an accident and things have never been the same since. Granted, it was not cuz of texting, but still. When you're on the road, you're not just responsible for you life, but for every person on the road as well. 100% concentration is crucial.

You are correct. Driving is probably the gravest responsibility most people ever accept, short of child rearing, yet we tend to take it very lightly.

I know someone who paid the price for texting while driving. They happen to post on this board.

My friend's Dad forced me to come into his computer room so he could show me pictures of a guy who got into such a horrible accident, his body was actually cut in half, because he was texting. And he even showed me the pictures of the body cut in half.

gone

Oh that's nice of him

Four teenage girls about half an hour from my university died in a car accident because the driver was texting. And then the Westboro Baptist Church picketed their memorial service.

Ahhh Sorry to hear that!

Eew that must have been gross Still those pics/vids make you realize that driving is very dangerous when you're not paying attention on the road.
Well done friends's Dad

This add on driving with drugs is shown in Australia. Not sure if there is a specific time it is shown, but I am pretty sure it is on all times of the day. Anyway, I think it is far to violent to be put on TV.

Not sure what it is trying to say though, if you are on drugs, don't forget to check your mirror or you will get hit by a car?

If you're drug driving, just keep driving

That one's a horrible advert too. It should be about making sure the road is clear before exiting your vehicle though.
