BREAKING NEWS: Michelle Kwan to return to skating this August

http://www.xportsnews.com/tabid/92/E...R/Default.aspx

Rough Translation:
Figure skating star Yu-Na Kim, 19, has persuaded the legend of figure skating, Michelle Kwan, to come to Korea for the first time.

Kwan will appear August 14-16 at the Olympic Gymnastics Stadium with the All Stars on Ice 2009 tour.

This is Kwan's first show in three years, and she will debut 2 programs in the skating gala and will also feature World Champion Yu Na Kim. Kwan is a 5-time world champion and won eight national titles between 1998-2005.

Kwan is "excited to be appearing on such a special stage" and Kim has admired Kwan since childhood and considers it an honour to be able to skate with Kwan.

Tickets will go on sale in July.

In other news, Sasha Cohen and Evgeni Plushenko also have planned returns to competitive skating this season. Sasha will be competing in the Grand Prix France and America and Plushenko is to skate in Grand Prix Russia. Also, pairs team Xue Shen and Hungbo Zhao will return. Michelle was invited to Skate America and that invitation is still pending. Many speculate the new exhibition programs for Michelle will be her Olympic SP and LP.

Gone for 3 years and she debuts her comeback in....KOREA? I guess that just shows you the sad state of skating in the US. The whole sport seemed to have disappeared with her in the last 3 years.

Anyway, I'd tell her to break a leg but...she just might.

Well, true, but a lot of reasons to come back there rather than in America:

1)Less home press,
2)Less expectations in an EX (as opposed to a Grand Prix event)
3)On the current world champion's home soil so to speak
4)Checking in on the world champion's current form
5)A warm up for Skate America and the rest of the season

Kwan typically did a "cheesefest" event like Marshalls before the start of the season. High profile American competitions like that are now gone. They have since been switched to Asia where the market for skating is growing and thriving, so this event is potentially like any other year in which Michele would have competed. It's also unsure how many invitations to major events like this Michelle would have in route to potentially competing on the Olympic team again, so it was wise of her to take one like this.

Awesome news. I guess she is testing the waters.

Good luck, Michelle. I haven't really followed figure skating w/o her.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Michelle Kwan to return to skating this August

This is great. You have no idea what I've been doing for the last week.
Everyday I've been trying to find any info on a chance at Michelle's comeback to the sport and hopefully the Olympics.
I gave up yesterday because according to one article I read last month (on Sasha), an athlete had to mention by the end of June their intentions for the Olympics.

So June came and went and no word. I had really thought that the Michelle Kwan-era was over.
But this is great news. I'm so elated right now.

For one thing, many of the Russian skaters of Michelle's generation didn't get mentally tough and go after their jumps until their mid-to-late 20s, so there's hope for Kwan there as well.

Michelle is never forgotten. Especially with Vancouver less than a year away.
What brings in the highest ratings for the winter Olympics for NBC? Female figure skating.
NBC needed Michelle (hopefully) and Sasha to come back.
We need Michelle (hopefully) and Sasha to come back.

Kimmie is not up to her 2005 worlds skating yet.
Emily is too injury prone and Dick Button maybe right about her weight being an issue in skating.
The other girls cost us a spot for these Olympics this year in the worlds.
