Hill Street Blues was the first cop show by the same Steven Bochko who'd later do NYPD Blue. And the "pilot" for Hill Street was a 2 part Ironside episode that Raymond Burr and his regular sidekicks had only minor roles in. So in a sense that great series "grandfathered" NYPD Blue.
