DVD format help.

So I have this problem I am going to a friend later today and I wanna watch a movie with him but the problem is that he has an old DVD player which can't play .avi and stuff. My home one can't also but I convert to .vob and it works, but at my friend .vob doesnt also Any ideas on how to convert?

Umm it's like big and connected to the TV and audio system? It's not one of those small portable ones

Convert the files into MPEG1 format, this format can be played in any CD/DVD player
