Recording Artist's Singles Selection

Hi everybody!

I always thought recording artists were only allowed to release five album singles in their native country and three out of the country. I never thought this was a rule, but always thought it was what usually happens. However, there are major recording artists who have not followed this formula. Some don't release up to their five singles in their native country; Britney Spears-Blackout. Some release more than their five singles in their naitve country; Beyonce-I Am...Sasha Fierce. Others are all over the place with their three out of the coutry single releases; Kylie Minogue-X.

Can someone please explain why these three artist choose to release the number of singles they released? Furthermore, is there a rule within the industry as to how many singles you're allowed to release and where you're allowed to release them?

Thank you.

Take care.

Monica Seles | Martina Hingis | Anna Kournikova

Re: Recording Artist's Singles Selection

It depends one the response of the public whether they release more singles or not. If an artist such as Kylie isn't selling much, why release more material? However, if each single is a success, then there is a chance that more will be released e.g Pink and Fergie released about 7 singles in Australia each.

For example, Kylie's album relatively did not do well in Australia hence it was promoted in overseas markets more where more singles could be released. About Britney, no promo work was done for Blackout which is why not much effort was conducted into releasing as many singles. Also, she had an album coming out in a year and all the promotion went into that album rather than continue to release singles from Blackout.

With digital sales, it's easier to release as many singles as you want now. T.I release a single each week digitally for 6 weeks last year and Taylor Swift did something similar as well by releasing multiple singles in a short time span from Fearless.

It varies in each scenario though.
