Those in UK, how much is the price for a litre of petrol now?

Just to have a quick survey on what transport I should use when travelling around UK....
  1. How much is a litre of petrol now in UK? And which one is the most worthwhile (i.e: cheapest and fuel-saving). I am renting a Ford Mondeo station wagon by the way.
  2. As I am travelling from Glasgow to Newcastle, then Birmingham, Wolvenhampton and finally London, roughly how many times do I need to pump petrol (assuming the trip from Glasgow to Newcastle starts with a full tank of gas)?
Help on above is highly appreciated, as if renting a car is too expensive, I might go on trains or busses instead. Thanks!

Re: Those in UK, how much is the price for a litre of petrol now?

I filled up yesterday for 98p/ litre. There are some differences between fuel stations though (I've seen as high as £1.04/ litre), usually big supermarkets like Sainsbury's and Asda are cheapest, but the difference isn't much.

I'd say for that trip you'd expect to fill up twice if you take the most direct route, possibly three times. Have no idea how much that car uses though, but for my car it would be 2-3 times (Rover 200).

Why would anyone go to Wolverhampton? :S

I also wonder why you'd want to go to Wolverhampton.

I just filled up £1.15 ultimate unleaded from BP - I tend to find it does give me more mileage for my money which is why I don't go for the standard.

It'll be much cheaper to get the coach I suspect.

Trains are very expensive in the UK to buy on the day.

If you book in advance it can potentially be very cheap though. Furthermore, if you are under 26, you can get a 16-25 railcard for £20 which saves one-third on all train journeys.

For low-cost inter-city travel look at this site: http://www.megabus.com/uk/
Which gives the option of trains and buses in one search. For instance, looking at trains for the 9th July, you can go from Birmingham to London for as little as £3. For comparison buying the ticket on the day would cost £31.00 (if going after 9am, before 9am it's more)

Glasgow- Newcastle is not a route megabus promotes though. Look on the local train operator's website- for this route I think it would be stagecoach.

The petrol station that i pass everyday in Manchester is 102.9 for both petrol and diesel atm. Thats always a bit more expensive than other places though.

The transport system here, whichever method you choose, is an ordeal, a long car journey risks endless traffic jams, with no obvious cause, ditto the coach journey which would be even longer, National Express can be a soul destroying experience. Go by train and the trains are routinely late assuming they turn up at all.

Im going down to Heathrow in August...its shameful that in order to feel confident of getting my flight, Id have to travel down the day before and stay at a hotel on site.
