Question About Citing Sources

I am doing a research project in MLA format and in my written "report" I only cited certain sources. On my bibliography however, I cited all the sources I used to help with my research including ones not mentioned in the report. Is this okay to do? If it helps, my bibliography is annotated so...

Re: Question About Citing Sources

Can I ask why you didn't cite certain sources? I'm guessing you just used them for general info/perspective on the issue, like background info right? If thats the case yeah I think you're OK referencing them in the bibliography - I'd just make sure in the annotation you mention what purpose it served in helping you write the report.

Re: Question About Citing Sources

every fact that you read in another paper/book should be referenced as to where you got that info.

Any books/papers you read but didn't directly use for the project can be mentioned in the bibliography but you have to state you read it for 'fruther reserach' or something like that.

Re: Question About Citing Sources

I don't know your situation, but in grad school, you must have all of your references cited in the paper.

As stupid as it is, and as crap as the "rules" in academia are, it's better to overcite sources than be accused of plagiarism, and better to excise sources altogether when you can't directly use them in the text.

"If you practice for ten years, you may begin to please yourself, after 20 years you may become a performer and please the audience, after 30 years you may please even your guru, but you must practice for many more years before you finally become a true artist—then you may please even God." --Ali Akbar Khan, 1922-2009
