Re: Any Book Suggestions?

Child of Fortune by Norman Spinrad--cosmic science fantasy at its finest. Casts the Peter Pan story and the 1960s' Summer of Love against the backdrop of the far future. Told as a first-person narrative using a form of English that's been infused with phrases from many of the world's major languages and a very florid style influenced by William Morris and Lord Dunsany. Absolutely, positively the best speculative-fiction novel of the last thirty years.

On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony--Anthony has written a lot of crap, but this is easily his best, in which a modern-day loser finds himself taking over the role of Death. Lots of middlebrow philosophizing mixed with some interesting fantasy concepts. The first in a series, the rest of which were fair-to-mediocre. Thoughtful and thought-provoking.

The Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake--ranks with Lord of the Rings as the greatest modern work of fantasy. A kitchen servant in a city-sized castle plots the disruption of the castle's ancient and almost-endless set of rituals. Brilliant writing. Get a copy illustrated by the author, if possible.

The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson. Almost impossible to describe in a few words; the full Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Land) is almost necessary. The full story can be found at http://fiction.eserver.org/novels/ni.../contents.html .

Of these four, only On a Pale Horse might be considered "light reading." The other three are a little bit more demanding (in varying degrees).

Hope these are promising.

"If you practice for ten years, you may begin to please yourself, after 20 years you may become a performer and please the audience, after 30 years you may please even your guru, but you must practice for many more years before you finally become a true artist—then you may please even God." --Ali Akbar Khan, 1922-2009

It's the first in the trilogy, yes.

Nowadays, it may be easier to get all three books in one volume.
