Russian race walkers suspended for doping

I couldn't make this up if I tried:

MOSCOW (AP)—Five Russian race walkers, including world record-holder Sergei Morozov, have been suspended for two years for doping.

Morozov, Viktor Burayev, Vladimir Kanaikin, Igor Yerokhin and Alexei Voevodin were sanctioned by the national federation for testing positive for the endurance-enhancing hormone EPO, the All Sport news agency said Tuesday.

Morozov holds the world record in the 20 kilometer walk, and Kanaikin is the former record holder in the event. Voevodin was the bronze medalist in the 50K walk at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Morozov and Yerokhin tested positive on June 29, and the others on April 20, All Sport said.

The was no immediate comment from the federation.

Russia’s track and field athletes were dogged by doping allegations before and during the Beijing Olympics.

Kanaikin and Morozov both went under the world record at the national trials in March, but neither competed in Beijing. Kanaikin was dropped from the squad and replaced by 2005 world champion Sergei Kirdyapkin.

Morozov was entered but did not start the 20k race in Beijing.

Seven Russian women were provisionally suspended by the IAAF in July for allegedly manipulating urine samples.

Walking is a funny sport, the competitors look like birds waddling really fast!

Sad that even in a meaningless "sport" that is a complete waste of time to do or watch, people turn to doping.

What a stupid comment.

In theory most if not all sports are "pointless"...Its not like being the best badminton or football player (for example) will help you much in everyday life.

Think before you speak, next time. I personally love watching the walking cos I know it is such a hard event to compete in.

I don't know about badminton, but being the best football player in any country besides the United States and Canada will make you insanely wealthy and famous. Lots of money does help in everyday life.

Stupid.

20k is less than a marathon, and 50k is longer. They have the three distance events staggered, so that a really proficient athlete could make all three: (20k race walk, 50k race walk, and marathon.--)

Sad for them.

Other clean Russian race walkers won gold medals for Russia anyway.

Race walking is completely pointless. It's like running but doing it in an unnatural way. Why?? What would compel anyone to move like that? It's nothing more than an existing sport with an enforced handicap. Let's make swimming with your hands tied behind your back an official sport as well. Or cycling where you can only use one pedal.
