Britain going down the toilet

I'm not from the British tourist board. You can probably guess that from the title. Around the world millions are starving, without clean water, ravaged by war, corruption and powerlessness. This isn't the case in Britain. In fact we've been pretty fortunate for a very long time. Longer than virtually anyone in fact. But whereas most of the world seems to be moving forward, Britain is regressing.

I'm not saying it is unique to Britain. It could be said of the US aswell, at least. First of all, it's our lack of education that bothers me. Kids leave school grotesquely ignorant despite passing exams (having been programmed how to answer questions by teachers) and many go to university where they study as little as possible, preferring to watch mtv and drink alcohol all the time. No doubt they are given a degree - that stops universities losing their funding - so they head for the world of work without a clue what to do. And don't think employers have much interest in training staff, time-consuming and expensive as that is and it's a bit annoying when employees leave once they've had their training. As a result, UK productivity is pitiful. We're as rich as the French, but only because we work much longer hours. Britain only keeps itself afloat by having anti-social deregulatory policies like no maximum working hours, restriction in workers rights i.e making it easier to sack people.

Indeed Britain is now very much a dog eat dog society. Extremely individualist, people are only loyal to themselves. Communities have broken down to a worse extent than most developed countries, child welfare, according to UNICEF, is the worst in the developed world, the prison population is the highest in Europe, drug-taking and under-age sex are rife - teen pregnancy the highest in Western Europe and there is massive social breakdown, with a large number of kids growing up without fathers.

Most depressingly, the values of the British have changed quite dramatically. Rampant materialism, obsession with appearances, brands, social status, wealth and quality of possessions has lead to a pernicious 'keeping up with the Joneses' attitude. In many parts of Britain the greatest force of enlightenment is the nearest shopping mall. If you think it's all village greens, cricket and cups of tea you'll be shocked. Parliament, the Church, Monarchy and Trade Unions are a side-show, big business is omnipotent - the very rich give large sums to political parties and as a result get taxed favourably(favour returned), so there is a major distortion of wealth, with a new super-rich getting richer and richer, while the wealth of the rest is fairly stagnant.

There is no optimism about the future - just look at whenever Brits try to be patriotic - it's always focused on the past because we can't really bear the present. In fact people aren't really interested in the future, they're only interested in instant gratification, be it sex, drugs, food, computer games - whatever your vice. Meanwhile we sleepwalk towards the edge of the cliff.

That may seem overly negative and many of those characteristics are similar to America. We're following them - imagine an America without the religion, small town community life and social confidence of its citizens. That is where Britain is headed. So as other countries become richer, please look to continental Europe as an example of good quality of life and ignore Britain.

Hopefully you might be able to see now why Britain has produced so few quality tennis players.

Re: Britain going down the toilet

Is your name Michelle Obama?

No optimism in the future?

Individualism is bad?

Uh, it's called personal responsiblity.
The big brother govt. is not your mommy and daddy.
You, yes, you should try to take care of yourself, your family, your neighbors, community first and foremost
above the govt.

Our worst centers of poverty in the West are nothing compared to what real poverty is around the world.
We're generally very spoiled brats, with the attention span of a 1 year old.

I agree on our education system...but, who has set most of the rules in the USA for education for the past
several decades - the liberal left, the teacher union, and progressives.....it's been more of an effort to
build self esteem and less to teach history, reading, writing, science, computers, etc. Bush tried to get
standard testing imposed, you would have thought he was trying to outlaw apple pie and Mother's Day.

Lighten up.

If you inhaled the same stuff Al Gore and Michelle Obama did, yeah, you're near suicidal.

If you stopped inhaling the funny green leaf stuff...you can realize we have a better life
expectancy than our parents, we have easier, better jobs to get and look forward to, access to
better education at any level, cleaner air and water than in the 1960's, cleaner cars to buy,
access to organic food, every high tech tool you could want at cheaper prices day by day........
and more freedom of speech and religion and lifestyle than ever before.

We also have a real problem with a part of the world that would prefer to live like Osama Bin Laden
in a cave with a Koran, slicing off heads of those who disagree w/them....but, no bother really.
It's all made up I'm told.

According to her, we're all luck not to be living in a cave, being chased by The Man....
oh my, how did she make it in life with her Ivy League education, 6 figure job, healthy
kids, good husband, multi-million dollar income, great home, power jobs, she somehow
struggled to achieve this, and yet, you, you losers, you never will....The Man is out to
get you.

Lighten up.
Do more individually to help those around you, and yourself.
Don't whine. Just do something.

Re: Britain going down the toilet

Religion in the USA is not the problem.

As we, as a nation, have forced faith and Christianity out of the public arena in schools, etc.,
our overall test scores have fallen too.

I find it amusing that is the first thing we want to attack.

Most of Europe, like England, is generally politically and academically anti-religion, and yet
the poster is referring the two (USA & UK) are in the same boat anyway...
