Black supermodels say fashion is racist

Quote:
Some of the world's top black supermodels are banding together to put pressure on the fashion industry, which they say has become increasingly racist in the past decade.
Naomi Campbell, Iman and Tyson Beckford were among those who launched the campaign against race discrimination at a rally in New York, The Guardian reported.
They were joined by models, designers and other fashion industry luminaries, who said they intended to pressure the fashion industry into acknowledging the problem.

Ms Campbell reportedly said she could no longer get on the cover of British Vogue, and had only snagged the cover of French Vogue after designer Yves Saint Laurent threatened to cut off his company from the magazine.
"Do I still want to be on the cover of British Vogue? Absolutely I do," Ms Campbell said.
"It's not because I don't sell, because I do sell more than many of my white counterparts."
Several other speakers at the event said the fashion industry was increasingly closed to African-Americans.
"The rules have become stricter. When I first started in the business, a beautiful model of any colour could be on the cover," Ivan Bart, vice-president of IMG models, said.
The event was organised by former model and agency owner Bethann Hardison, who helped launch Ms Campbell's career.
The participants are reportedly intending to hold monthly meetings to maintain pressure on the industry.

I actually agree. A shallow, racist, irrelevant industry. Why does it even exist?

so true

"racism is dead, it died when MLK walked on a bridge and freed the slaves. Now we have a socialist Kenyan president who is not an American and if anyone mentions race they are a reverse racist (while racism is dead, reverse racism is alive and well.) #whattheyteachyouatfox"

Re: Black supermodels say fashion is racist

Not exactly a surprise that there's discrimination in the fashion industry Not that I take much from Naomi's 'struggles' - She's got such a bad reputation, I am sure she's probably burned more than her fair share of bridges. But definitely, there is a lack of diversity and that's not confined solely to black models. It applies to basically anyone that isn't stick thin and white. I'm not sure what, if anything, can really be done to change that, but it's nice to at least see a few more high-profile people standing up to talk about it and attempt to make some sort of difference.

"Religion has actually convinced people that there is an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. Any if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But he loves you."

i'd rather watch a shallow fashion show than a sickly (deep???) show depicting fat, lazy, ugly and dumb women about their troubles...

I love how some posters chastise sam for posting something relevant, esp to the issues of this board. It's like you want him to be racist so you can dislike him.

anyway...

No, I'm not surprised either that there is racism in the fashion industry. However, I think individually not being the go to choice may not have anything to do with skin color. I'd bet a lot of money that Naomi doesn't get on magazine covers not because she's Black, but because it's been well publicized that she's a crazy bitch who'll assault you in a second.

I'm waiting for somebody to give Naomi Campbell a good beat down. Then I might care about her concerns.

Re: Black supermodels say fashion is racist

Just to play devil's advocate, isn't it also true that a lot of models are coming out of the old East Bloc and South America these days? And that they generally work for less than models from the US and Western Europe?

I don't know a enough about the industry to say for sure, so I just raise that because I'm pretty sure I saw some article on the 'net somewhere that said there were a lot of models complaining about the glut of models from those regions.

I'd have thought, though, that the shallow, image-obsessed, and utterly pointless fashion industry expects and thrives on such behaviour. NC may be a violent loon, but she's still an exquisitely beautiful woman, and one would expect that to override everything else in that industry.

Best left-right combination by a German (and that includes Max Schmeling): Steffi Graf. All she did in 1987 was knock Navratilova out of #1 and try to knock Evert out of the sport. (Mike Lupica in "The Best and Worst of Tennis in 1987", World Tennis)

"A couple of years ago, we nicknamed Steffi Graf's forehand 'Jaws'. And that music would go perfectly when she starts running in to the net, swarming on that little ball." (JoAnne Russell, during the 1988 Wimbledon final between Graf and Navratilova)
