Question for the Brits on the board.

I recently was given a set of DVD of a British series that was on in the 1990s called As Time Goes By.

It was a little irritating at first but I must admit that I'm now a big fan of that show. Was it a big hit in Britain when it was on the air?

It certainly seems to have a huge internet following.

Yes it was very popular, think it used to be on early Sunday evening, when pracically everyone was watching TV.

It's not exactly to my taste, but Judi Dench is

Venus Kvitova
Halep Rybarikova

Yes indeed very popular over here. Or it was. Not made anymore (I think) I think there were about 7 or 8 seasons made.

Re: Question for the Brits on the board.

It was fairly popular and even has a bit of a cult following in the States thanks to PBS, but I felt it was a show that promoted a very outdated, twee, white, middle-class image of Britain. It was only mildly funny and a total waste of its lead actors' talents. Dame Judi deserved a lot better than that.

Best left-right combination by a German (and that includes Max Schmeling): Steffi Graf. All she did in 1987 was knock Navratilova out of #1 and try to knock Evert out of the sport. (Mike Lupica in "The Best and Worst of Tennis in 1987", World Tennis)

"A couple of years ago, we nicknamed Steffi Graf's forehand 'Jaws'. And that music would go perfectly when she starts running in to the net, swarming on that little ball." (JoAnne Russell, during the 1988 Wimbledon final between Graf and Navratilova)

Agreed. It was a bit *too* gentle IMO.

Venus Kvitova
Halep Rybarikova

It is a bit on the gentle side but I think that's why I like it.
Almost every sitcom in the US seems to think that they need to be "ungentle" for want of a better word.
