Re: American Idol Television Ratings Continue to Drop....Three Weeks Running
If you look at the history of TV, nothing stays dominant forever. I mean if you look at TV by time period.... everytype of show dominates at one point.
60's Rural sitcoms dominated the ratings (ie Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, Andy Griffith)
70's Controversial sitcoms rule the ariwaves (All In the Family, Good Times, Sanford and Son, Three's Company, Maude)
Early 80's, dramas and late night soap operas ruled the airwaves (Dallas, Dynasty, Knot's Landing, Miami Vice)
Mid 80's to early 90's family sitcoms reignited the interest in sitcoms (The Cosby Show, Roseanne, Growing Pains, Who's the Boss, Family Matters)
Mid 90's to early 00's, city based sitcoms as well as medical and legal dramas lead the way (ie Friends, Seinfeld, Will & Grace, Law & Order series, CSI series...)
Early 00's to present, REALITY, REALITY, REALITY (ie Survivor, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Skating with Start blah blah)
So possibly could the reality wave be dying down, with it's flagship American Idol (#1 for the last 3 years) going down in public interest? Hopefully so, I personally would love for the sitcom genre to make a big comeback. Currently there is only ONE sitcom (Two and a Half Men) ranked in the top 20. When at one time NBC's whole entire Thursday night line up from 8:00pm-10:00pm regularly lodged in the top 10. True there are shows like Desperate Housewifes, but IMO that is more of a dramedy rather than a sitcom taped in front of a live audience.
Really, don't even look at me...
