Travelling to Miami, need advice/help

Ok, so I am scheduled to travel to Miami in the Month of July for a conferece. The Conference will be held at the Miami Beach convention center. Basically I have 3 dilemmas becasue I am partially organizing this trip for our group.

Arrival: Flying into Ft. Lauderdale is nearly $100 cheaper than flying into Miami International. Now the conference hotels are the

Miami Marriott located at 1633 Bayshore Dr.

Radisson Miami 1601. Biscayne Blvd.

Now based on you all's experience is the $100 I will save flying into Ft. Lauderdale worth it considering I will have to travel to one of these two locations. I have been reading that a cab or van can be $30 from Miami International to these hotels and if it is like $60 from Ft. Lauderdale I would rather fly into MIA but what opinion can you offer? Does anyone have any idea how much a cab from Ft. lauderdale can cost?

Issue #2

Beaches - Everyone obviously wants to go to the beaches, however, I have read South Beach is nearly 8 miles away from these hotels. If we wanted to go to South Beach what is the easiest way to get there? Also is South Beach really worth it? What other beaches are closer that are worth going to?

Shopping - 8 of us are comig and 5 are girls so we will be doing shopping. Everyone wants to go to Lincoln Road or Ocean Drive etc but i doubt these girls will dish out the money to spend at these trndy areas. Are there any nice boutiques, shopping spots that offer nice clothes shops for considerably lower prices.

Alt Transportation - How is the light rail system in Miami?

Thanks for any help you can offer

Ok I have not been to Miami besides a layover in the airport but I looked it up and Ft. Lauderdale is approximately 32 miles from Miami. A cab ride in my experience has usually started at about $4.00 plus ~50 cents per quarter mile so you're looking at around a 60-70 dollar cab fare from Ft. Lauderdale as a base rate. If you run into heavy traffic and get stuck, the meter still runs and you're looking at even higher a price. I'd take the plane to Miami and spare myself the long ride and inconvenience.

Blowing out someone else's candle does not make yours shine brighter.

1. Fly into Miami. You will not save by flying into Ft. lauderdale unless you are renting a car anyway.
2. Beaches. Any beach is fine. Beaches all over the place there.
3. Shopping. Go to South Beach/Lincoln Road for the taste of trendyMiami. Lower prices you can just go to your hometown WalMart. A lot of the fun of shopping is just the looking around and being there, anyway.
