2nd Guessing Virg. Tech. Officials

I suppose it's easy to do now.

Should they have done more to alert the campus community after
discovering the two bodies in a dorm at 7 a.m.? Perhaps, to say
they did not have a suspect in custody yet, be aware?

I think yes. But, I'm looking at it from the point of view in So. Cal.,
where in the big city, officials regularly quickly hold press conferences
to give details - even if very sketchy. To ask for public help, to say
be aware and alert, and we have instant amber alerts on freeway
signs looking for cars or suspects.

This is a small college town in picturesque Virginia. Who knows.

They did have bomb alerts the week before, some other kind of
violent alert earlier than that. They were on some sort of edge in
the area. Was it just finals week prank? Was it a frat gag?

Yes.
They likely should have done more.
However, I'm not sure how much more they could have
done, with what they knew at the time, and the history
of the university they had in hand.

But, I don't think it is reasonable to presume they had any idea
this guy would go on a shooting rampage two and a half hours later.
That's unheard of. Never done like that before anywhere in the area.

Safe to say, any minor or major violent incident on a big campus from now
on will result in an all campus alert by any and all means possible, or
a shut down completely.

Sadly, the more things seem to come to light, the more it seems the
officials early on made several key mistakes in not informing the
campus community of more, and earlier.....

I wonder if we'll find out he had anything to do with the bomb
threats to test the security earlier in the month.

Copy cat time.

I guarantee you any school official will lock down, clamp down,
evacuate any school upon any minor or major incident at any
level of school.

Now, we find out that his English Dept. professor (at least one) had
referred him to counseling because his writings were disturbing, noting
he was troubled.

Early signs of problems?

A local, state, and federal investigation will follow.

Did they follow the protocol set down by their own
emergency plans?

Blame will be put upon the President of the University,
University police, city, county, and state police too.
Who decided not to inform the news or campus of the
first murders immediately, when the shooter was nowhere
to be found.

I do not think it is reasonable to think they knew a mass murder
would follow what was rightly deemed a domestic incident - he
dated her, or stalked her, he knew the girl he killed first.

Giovanni, other professors, wanted the kid out of their classes, due to
his menacing behavior, taking pictures w/cellphone, sunglasses,
failure to communicate, violent writings, etc. He was one weird,
sick guy. Again, nothing illegal at that point.

Stalking, yeah, someone should have pressed charges against
him at some point.

Would that have set him off earlier instead? Who knows.

How far can a public university go in deciding whether or not to
keep a student in class, on campus, if his or her behavior is
so threatening to the school and classmates? Not too far legally.

It seems the University was looking at the boyfriend of the girl
killed first, they were talking to him, per the witnesses. He owned
a gun, spoke of it, etc. He had nothing to do w/it, but it was an
understandable lead to follow early on.

Re: 2nd Guessing Virg. Tech. Officials

The Ismail Ax refers to Abraham, Ismael, Isaac, in the Bible, and later
on in the Koran. Ismail is from the Muslim version, and is taken to be
the true son of sacrifice. He put that on his arm knowing he was
making a mark as the son of sacrifice, for Ismail, for Islam. Whether
or not he believed in that much is uncertain, but, he was smart, and
he knew what it would mean.

Can the media stop saying they don't know what Ismail Ax means?
It's not hard to look up. Kids in Sunday School can probably tell you
about Isaac and Ismail and Abraham.

The Bible has the opposite version, Isaac is the one spared. Jews
are the descendents of Isaac, Muslims of Ismail (Ishmael).

Dude was crazy.

Small town university isn't a minimum security prison (and few would want to attend a school where security is always "in their shit").

Life sucks, sometimes.

Time to heal.

If your fave's coach isn't Richard Williams, that's just her first problem...

I was there when the ALL BLACKS won the World Cup in 2011!!!
