Bush to Allow 7,000 Iraqi Refugees Into U.S.

WASHINGTON (Feb. 14) - The Bush administration plans to allow about 7,000 Iraqi refugees to settle in the United States over the next year, a huge expansion at a time of mounting international pressure to help those who have fled in the nearly four-year-old war.
The United States has allowed only 463 Iraq refugees into the country since the war began, even though some 3.8 million have left. A senior State Department official described the expanded program on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement later Wednesday.

The administration also plans to pledge $18 million for a worldwide resettlement and relief program. The United Nations has asked for $60 million from nations around the world.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met Wednesday with U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres to outline the expanded U.S. program. The 7,000 would be resettled from nations outside Iraq where they have fled. The U.S. proposal also includes plans to offer special treatment for Iraqis still in the country whose cooperation with the U.S. government puts them at risk from sectarian reprisal.
Most refugees have fled to Syria and Jordan, both of which have recently tried to restrict the influx. The U.N. estimates that 40,000 to 50,000 people flee Iraq each month and have dwindling options of where to go.

U.S. diplomats have discussed the situation directly with the Syrian government, the State Department official said. That is notable because of the administration's reluctance to engage Syria in high-level discussions about security in Iraq. The U.S. has also discussed the refugee problem with Jordan, a close ally, then official said.

Re: Bush to Allow 7,000 Iraqi Refugees Into U.S.

We allowed hundred of thousands of European, South Korean,Vietnamese,
African, etc., refugees in after wars and conflicts.

We allowed thousands of refugees from the Kosovo/Bosnia/Croatia
regions, after that military conflict.

The US has talked to Syria and Iran all this time. It's not new.

What the USA has not done, is have publicized, high level
'good for tv' summits, that do nothing.

We talk to Venezuela too. Just don't see or say much about it.

The security in Iraq would improve if Syria would stop trying to
topple the new govt., much the same way it has done in Lebanon
for decades. That's the Syrian way.

Which is pretty much what any talking with Syria and Iran end up
being, nothing. They are funded and helped by China and Venezuela,
they are assisted in spreading terrorists around the world, not just
in Iraq.

Yup, and when they reach the airport in the US they will be racially profiled like a mahfah and when they move into their new apartments and get on with their lives they'll be put on the FBI's terrorist watch list. Welcome to the good old US of A.

All they have to do is cross the Mexican border, and no one will care they are here...

From what I hear, some of your fellow Bush Repukes are riding in trucks picking them off like target practice.

I wonder what they'd to them if they found out they were gay.

You're so right, I never hear anyone say a word about illegal immigration from Mexico it's like the family secret that no one talks about but everyone knows about.

I thought Bush went there to liberate them and bring democracy so they wouldn't have to come here.

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the SILENCE OF OUR FRIENDS. MLK
