Long Beach hate crime case - probation given to teens

10 black teens beat up 3 white girls on Halloween in Long Beach.

Racial slurs by black teens to white teens.

1 girl is seriously hurt, needs more surgery and rehab.
Other two are beaten, and left for dead. Good samaritans
step in to help chase off the beaters.

The good samaritan is followed by gangs after she
testifies, gang members sit on her car outside her home,
her car is thereafter demolished. She is now in hiding.

The 3 victims go to court, and ask for apology from beaters,
and do not get it.

This was attempted murder, assault, battery, and yes, hate
crime charges were brought as well.

If it had been 10 white teens beating up 3 black teens, would
it have received such little national publicity?

The judge said the evidene was overwhelming, and had it been
adult court, they'd be looking at hard time, especially the
one male defendant.

He, and the 4 others on Friday, get house probation and no jail
time to the 3 months they served awaiting trial.

The others will be sentenced today. Result will likely be the
same, probation.

I have no problem with the lesser defendants getting probation.
They served time already. No active gang ties known, but
associations exist. No previous records. This is what normally
passes as a sentence - 3 months and probation.

However, the 3 or 4 who were active attackers, especially the
guy, should have received harder sentences. They should have
received at least one full year, if not more.

Shame on the judge for relenting to publicity, and giving lenient

The 3 attacked women and their families are now marked by
gangs in the area, and will likely have to move. The sentences
just showed that you can beat up someone in a hate crime.

The victims will sadly be victimized again if they don't get out
of the area, and even then, it may not be too safe for them.

Shame on the LA Times and LA Daily News for giving this such
little attention.

The good samaritan and other witness at the scene, one of whom is
black, are now living in fear, and may have to move away. Gangs
are still harassing them, and their families.

I think the judge made an error in not giving the 2 or 3 who did the
most physical harm (hitting the woman on the head with a skate board
while she was on the ground), some time in juvenile detention.

In Long Beach last year, two teens were given 6 months for killing
a baby shark at the aquarium.
