Woman puts baby through airport x-ray

Woman puts baby through airport x-ray

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A woman mistakenly put her 1-month-old grandson through an X-ray machine at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.

A startled security worker noticed the shape of a child on the carry-on baggage screening monitor and immediately pulled him out, the Los Angeles Times reported for a story in Wednesday's editions.

The infant was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he did not receive a dangerous dose of radiation.

"This was an innocent mistake by an obviously inexperienced traveler," said Paul Haney, deputy executive director of airports and security for the city's airport agency.

The incident happened early Saturday, airport officials said.

Haney said in 1988, an infant in a car seat went through an X-ray machine at the Los Angeles airport.

Re: Woman puts baby through airport x-ray

maybe (=hopefully) the baby will get super powers from the exposure to x-rays?

hopefully this super-baby will be able to save the world from terrorists trying to smuggle exploding babies onto flights.

The woman could have easily just set the child down and realized it was on the conveyor belt or something similar, everyone does not automatically have to assume the worst.

Re: Woman puts baby through airport x-ray

Ironically, the flight itself would give the kid a higher dose of radiation than a single ride through the x-ray machine. He'll be fine.

I found this from Canada's National Dosimetry Services:

Quote:
According to information from the Health Canada industrial x-ray group, typical exposures in airport baggage x-ray machines in Canada are 0.3 to 0.6 mR per pass through the device. This would translate to about 0.003 to 0.006 mSv on our dosimeters, more or less depending on the exact spectrum present. The excess dose received due to the elevated cosmic ray levels at flight altitudes for domestic flights are significantly higher than this. For example, the cosmic ray dose on a one way flight from Toronto to Vancouver would be on the order of 0.02 mSv.
I'd suspected this after some stuff I'd read about the dosages of medical flouroscopes and they reminded me of airport x-ray machines.

By far a bigger danger to the kid's future is that his grandmother is stupid enough to do this. What will she do next?

Re: Woman puts baby through airport x-ray

She was an idiot.

Mistake?

Is that like a botched joke?

The baby was not helped with that radiation.
Language barrier? Inexperienced traveler?
She was just stupid, and I'm glad the
airport security personnel insisted on having
the baby checked out.

Oh come on... It does not mention the how the grandmar reacted, she may have been devestated at the time.. etc... mistakes happen... and in the end the baby has not been affected. I think some peopler are being slightly harsh on the grandma!

dropping a glass of water is a mistake. putting a newborn in a lugage xray machine, dishwasher, dryer, washer, or any of the other things adults have placed babies in recenty is something entirely different from a "mistake", IMO.

You're right, she did it on purpose because she wanted to kill her grandchild.
