Unhappy 'Tom & Jerry','Scooby Doo', 'Yogi Bear,' 'Flintstones' Creator Barbera Dies at age 95

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 18) - Joe Barbera, half of the Hanna-Barbera animation team that produced such beloved cartoon characters as Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear and the Flintstones, died Monday, a Warner Bros. spokesman said. He was 95.

Barbera died of natural causes at his home with his wife, Sheila, at his side, spokesman Gary Miereanu said.

With his longtime partner, Bill Hanna, Barbera first found success creating the highly successful Tom and Jerry cartoons. The antics of the battling cat and mouse went on to win seven Academy Awards, more than any other series with the same characters.

The partners, who had first teamed up while working at MGM in the 1930s, went on to a new realm of success in the 1950s with a witty series of animated TV comedies, including "The Flintstones," "The Jetsons," "Yogi Bear," "Scooby-Doo" and "Huckleberry Hound and Friends."

Their strengths melded perfectly, critic Leonard Maltin wrote in his book "Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons." Barbera brought the comic gags and skilled drawing, while Hanna brought warmth and a keen sense of timing.

"This writing-directing team may hold a record for producing consistently superior cartoons using the same characters year after year - without a break or change in routine," Maltin wrote.

"From the Stone Age to the Space Age and from prime time to Saturday mornings, syndication and cable, the characters he created with his late partner, William Hanna, are not only animated superstars, but also a very beloved part of American pop culture. While he will be missed by his family and friends, Joe will live on through his work," Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer said Monday.

Hanna, who died in 2001, once said he was never a good artist but his partner could "capture mood and expression in a quick sketch better than anyone I've ever known."

The two first teamed cat and mouse in the short "Puss Gets the Boot." It earned an Academy Award nomination, and MGM let the pair keep experimenting until the full-fledged Tom and Jerry characters eventually were born.

Jerry was borrowed for the mostly live-action musical "Anchors Aweigh," dancing with Gene Kelly in a scene that become a screen classic.

After MGM folded its animation department in the mid-1950s, Hanna and Barbera were forced to go into business for themselves. With television's sharply lower budgets, their new cartoons put more stress on verbal wit rather than the detailed - and expensive - action featured in theatrical cartoon.

I'm a h-u-g-e Scooby Doo fan!

That crazy group of kids could simply not stop themselves from getting mixed up in a mystery everywhere they went... from an old opera house with a secret trap door in the stage, to a broken down ghost ship hidden in a swamp, to a museum full of mummies and suits of armor.

And what memorable and lovable characters! Fred and Daphne, the handsome and beautiful, clean cut, rich, lead detectives. Velma, the smart one. Shaggy and Scooby, the reluctant detectives, scared of everything and always hungry.

I've just been reading over the Wikipedia on Scooby Doo. Brings back a lot of memories.

==============================

I have so many Scooby Doo things... including a stuffed dog from Kings Island, the air freshener hanging in my car right now, and a picture of Scooby on my front door.

Did you know you can get Scooby Doo Chia Pet now?

When I went to Disney World, it was so exciting to meet Scooby! But you know what he did? He molested me. No kidding. He grabbed me and touched me all over!!

Tom and Jerry creator Barbera dies

Washington (dpa) - Joseph Barbera, an animation pioneer who with partner Bill Hanna created ground-breaking cartoons like Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones and Scooby Doo, died Monday in Studio City, California, Warner Bros said.

The business partners founded Hanna-Barbera Studios in 1957, becoming one of the first groups to make cartoons for television.

Barbera, 95, was born in New York City in 1911 and worked as a banker before studying art and becoming an animator.

He first collaborated with Hanna, who died in 2001, in 1937 at MGM Studios, where the pair created another famous duo, the cartoon cat and mouse Tom and Jerry.

Tom and Jerry earned seven Academy Awards.

Barbera also worked to create the Flintstones. The Sitcom-style show that tracks the life of "the modern Stone Age family" has aired in more than 80 countries.

His adventures of a group of detective teens and their scared dog, Scooby-Doo Where are You?, ran for 17 years and is the longest-ever running animated television programme.

Other works include The Huckeberry Hound Show, The Jetsons and the Smurfs. Barbera remained active at his production company into his 90s.

Aw RIP, still he had a good innings!

Controversially......I was never a big fan of those cartoons. I used to like the Flinstones as a kid but the others used to bore me a bit.

I loved the Flintstones and the Jetsons (even if the plots were the same in many episodes)

Awwww...those were my favorite cartoons!! Tom and Jerry still cracks me up to this day - I love watching them on Cartoon Network!! I'm a five-year-old trapped in a 20-year-old body.
