Why do people watch Mel Gibson movies?

This is not meant to be a discussion about Mel Gibson and whatever issues he has.

I just don't understand what people get out of watching endless scenes of gory violence and torture without the slightest hint of irony or a tongue-in-cheek attitude. What's the point?

I'm not opposed to showing violence in movies in general, but not if it's just for the sake of showing violence.

Re: Why do people watch Mel Gibson movies?

I see movies based on plot and if I've liked the previous films by the actors or directors. I haven't seen most Mel Gibson movies, the plots don't appeal to me. I've never seen Braveheart or anything. I saw one of the Lethal Weapon movies, and one of the fags I'm usually stuck with conned me into Passion of the Christ, which was powerful, but I don't want to see it again. He's a good-looking guy, but his flicks don't appeal to Helen.

Re: Why do people watch Mel Gibson movies?

I've never been a big fan of Braveheart but it's certainly not just a movie about gory violence and torture. That can be said of any horror film and people still love those pieces of shit.

I had absolutely no interest in seeing The Passion of the Christ cos I hate Jesus.

But Apocalypto was one of the best movies of the year. I didn't find it to be that bloody either, certainly not as bad as any horror film out recently. And movies like that require no artistry and all have the same predicted plot line. Yet this thread doesn't address movies like that, hmm.

True, but Apocalypto isn't being pitched as a low-brow horror flick either. So yes, people are going to look at it with a differnt set of expectations.

My brother - a born-again Catholic, and not prone to queasyness - said he found the way PoC "reveled" in violence, blood and pain "almost pornographic," but I think there IS an audience for that kind of thing. Blood and gore that people who like to think they're above b-movie horror can enjoy without guilt. And there are people who just aren't phased by that kind of thing.

I'm interested in Apocalypto, but I AM phased by that level of violence (no, I didn't see "Kill Bill" either), so I don't think I'm going to spend money to go see it.

Reason is poor propaganda when opposed by the yammering, unceasing lies of shrewd and evil and self-serving men.

Re: Why do people watch Mel Gibson movies?

Kill Bill wasn't that bloody and violent

I hate movies like that Why would you go out and pay money to squirm in your seat for two hours, maybe some people like that

Another related issue, why are films with loads of gore called 'horrors'? There's nothing 'scary' about blood and guts, it's just disgusting, I wish they'd stop doing that...

Re: Why do people watch Mel Gibson movies?

Uh, why do people watch Scorsese movies with all the violence
and gore in them, and often Italian stereotyping?

David Lynch films which are always weird and creepy?

Almodovar movies which have every sexual combination-
contortion possible in them?

or

Woody Allen films in light of his stepdaughter/non-stepdaughter
marriage thing?

Polanski after the rape conviction thing?

Just because.

Curiosity?
Fame?
They don't care what anyone does.

I loved Woody Allen films, but haven't bothered with his work
since his Soon-Yi escapade. Just can't get that out of my head
when I see his work nowadays. I doubt I can get the DUI and
Jewish rants out of my head if I see a Mel movie from now on.

Passion of The Christ was too violent for me, but, I understood
why he did it. That's what happened. But, I got that in the first
5 minutes. 2 hours of it was too much. I don't plan on seeing
Apocalypto knowing it is just as violent as The Passion was. No
thanks. I also don't care for the way ABC and other outlets
helped him promote the film, and just skirted the DUI arrest thing
more or less.

However, Gibson has made some great films in The Patriot,
Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, Gallipoli, etc. I'm a fan of
the Lethal Weapon films, even if Danny Glover is a left wing
nut, and Mel is a DUI getting guy with a lot of serious issues
on his plate.

I'll just skip Apocalypto.
