It is one of the best reviewed films of the year...but many thought that Volver would get that nomination instead ... Interesting early developments in the Oscar race... many thought Little Miss Sunshine would be the "IT" Indie of the year, but Half Nelson is running away with the spotlight.

Anyway Letters from Iwo Jima from Clint Eastwood seems to be creating a lot of Oscar hype as well. It's even getting an earlier release just for Oscar consideration ala Million Dollar Baby.

I don't know how the Independent Spirit nominations are carried out but can they not nominate two Spanish language films for Best Picture? I haven't seen any of the other Best Picture nominees yet so can't comment on how they compare.

I think they can (even at the Oscars) but two nominations going to foreign films is very rare to see, let alone if both are Spanish speaking films. Well I really hope El Laberinto del Fauno wins as I think is a better film than Half Nelson.

I think the best Kate can do is a nomination, Helen Mirren is a pretty huge favourite to win Best Actress

Ivanovic * Kvitova * Serena

Won't that just split his votes with Flags of Our Fathers? Unless it's actually a considerably better film and the studios are writing off Flags' chances.
