I wish the United States of America had a different name because ...

trying to describe my nationality in Spanish is either politically charged or slightly annoying.

I don't like calling myself a norteamericano because I feel like it's not totally precise because it includes Canada.

I don't like calling myself an americano because that produces a "me too!" response.

I don't like calling myself a yanqui because that's like calling myself a ****** ... something I only do when I am talking with other ******s!

And I don't like calling myself an estadounidense because it sounds contrived and I never hear any native speakers of Spanish saying that.

I wish the USA had a different name, that we were called United Statesians, or something else. Damn you, Continental Congress!

Is your nationality Spanish or is your ancestry Spanish?

Sounds like you have the two confused.

Nationality = Citizenship

Ancestry = Where your family originally came from

Мари́я Ю́рьевна Шара́пова , Јелена Јанковић, Venus Williams.

My nationality is American. My ancestry is German, French and Swedish.

I am trying to say that I don't like any of the options given to me when I say "I am American" in Spanish. Each of the options presented annoys me slightly. I just say "Soy de EE.UU." instead, but I wish my country had a different name just to make things easier.

I was the Bombshell from Brooklyn, so it was easy for me to describe myself!

To me it represents states' rights. Merely annoying re. needing to get a new drivers license and car registration if one moves what may be a short distance. More significant re. the sad history of states' rights in oppressing the former slaves and their descendants for another century after the end of the Civil War.

BTW, I'm extremely moved to have gotten Kiwifan back in touch with his long repressed West Coast Coalition identity. (CKB and DD, where RU?)
