Should you feed your dog table scraps?

Supposedly this is something you are not supposed to do. It is unhealthy and blah blah blah. I disagree.

My dog is constantly begging and goes nuts at the sight of brussel sprouts and especially celery.

Stop eating things that are bad for your dog.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Generally it's bad but I think brussels sprouts and celery should be ok.

my dog (labrador) would die if she didn't get a couple of scraps every night.

The short quick answer is 'no'.

In fact I was just listening to this show a few minutes ago that stated pets are not used to holiday foods; the type we consider delicacies. Not only can they get extremely sick, but you can inadvertently kill them in some cases. I believe it had to do with spicy foods and chocolates and such.

it's generally ok since table scraps are the same food that we will and want to eat, only that they fell on the table/floor, we are too full to finish, etc.

Also they eat food that's been on the floor anyway, so something that we might consider dirty would probably be a treat for them.

Re: Should you feed your dog table scraps?

It has nothing to do with the food you give to the dogs (so long as it isn't onion, as onion is VERY bad for dogs, chocolate too) - It is all about mannerisms and behavior and what you are teaching your dog.

You say your dog is constantly begging for food at the table. When you feed your dog after s/he begs, you are rewarding him/her for begging at the table. Dogs should not be around the dinner table and especially not begging. What if you had guests over? An important dinner perhaps? Dogs should know that they are not to beg for food at the table, if they do so you should reprimand them by sending them to their basket if they have one or putting them outside. Soon they will learn not to do it.

It won't

Erika said enough but I must add that the food is a very important part of the hierarchy, you must not feed your dog before you or you can create or worsen behaviour dominant problems.

Anyways, a dog doesn't NEED the table scraps, the dog food is normally very well balanced. But if you want to create yourself problems of an eventual future rejection of "doggy food", you can give the scraps AFTER you finished eating. And give a little, as our food may cause problems to dogs. For the dog it's not the quantity but the fact that the "boss of the pack" gave him something sweet.

Re: Should you feed your dog table scraps?

no you shouldn't, but if you must give them table scraps you certainly shouldn't feed them to your dog at the table. they won't beg at the table if you don't feed them there

anyway, you don't eat your dog's food (or at least i hope you don't! ) so your dog really shouldn't be eating yours.

Re: Should you feed your dog table scraps?

yes you should ...though my last owner she never fed me at all...rarely... ..and i had to go all alone to the nearest KFC and eat all the scraps that people gave me...it was so scary for me because there were two horrible Rottweilers that would chase me and try to bite me

Re: Should you feed your dog table scraps?

it's proven that dogs live three years LONGER when they only eat table scraps (13 yrs <-> 10 years). When you mix table scraps + dogfood, they only live one year longer (11 years).

My dog has been eating table scraps for all her life, she's 15 years old

Re: Should you feed your dog table scraps?

I say no. They'e begging because you've trained them to beg by giving them the scraps. If you do give them food, do not do it at the table. Also do not give dogs chocolate or grapes/raisins as they are highly toxic to them

Re: Should you feed your dog table scraps?

I know I shouldn't but I do hehe. When the vet complains about her weight I don't. I also feed my aunt's dog when I go over, so much so that he associates me with food now . We have this routine where he meets and greets me at the door and escorts me to the kitchen -- so damn cute.

Re: Should you feed your dog table scraps?

Depends on what the food is, my grandmother had a dog that lived to be so so so old and gave him chocolate donuts, cakes, meats, cheese....etc

I am patient, but do not push, for it is silently one night I will wake, and you will find me gone come morning.

I'm a male
