Robbers prey on PlayStation 3 buyers

POSTED: 2013 GMT November 17, 2006

PUTNAM, Connecticut (AP) -- Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people waiting for the new PlayStation 3 game system to go on sale in Putnam early Friday and shot one man who refused to give up his money, authorities said.

About 30 miles away, another shopper was beaten and robbed of his new PlayStation 3 just minutes after he bought it at a store in Manchester, police said.

Nationwide, short supplies of the PS3 and strong demand led to long lines of buyers, some waiting for days outside stores. Once the doors opened Friday, customers pushed and shoved their way to the shelves in several cities to get at the limited supply.

The attacks and robberies in Connecticut appeared to be the most violent.

It was about 3 a.m. when the two gunmen in Putnam, a town of about 9,000 residents in northeast Connecticut, confronted 15 to 20 people standing outside a Wal-Mart store and demanded money, said State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance.

"One of the patrons resisted. That patron was shot," Vance said.

Vance said the two gunmen fled after shooting Michael Penkala, 21, of Webster, Massachusetts, in the chest and shoulder. Penkala was in stable condition at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, with injuries not believed to be life threatening, Vance said.

Police were searching for the suspects, both believed to be in their teens, Vance said. He said one was wearing a ski mask and brandishing a handgun, and the other had what appeared to be a shotgun.

In the Manchester attack, the shopper told police five men surrounded and beat him as he left the Shoppes at Buckland Hills with the new PlayStation.

Police Sgt. Chris Davis said the alleged attackers pushed one of colleagues out of the car as they drove away. That man, a 17-year-old from Windsor, was charged with robbery, larceny, assault and breach of peace. His name was not released.

In Palmdale, California, authorities shut down a Super Wal-Mart after some shoppers got rowdy late Wednesday. In West Bend, Wisconsin, a 19-year-old man was injured when he ran into a pole racing with 50 others for one of 10 spots outside a Wal-Mart.

In Lexington, Kentucky, someone fired BB pellets from a passing vehicle at people waiting outside a Best Buy store, according to WKYT, whose own reporter said she was among four people grazed while she interviewed buyers in line.

A Best Buy in Boston, aware it had only 140 of the consoles, got smart about the big sale -- its employees gave out tickets to the first 140 people in line so everyone could go home until the store opened.

I wanted to try to get one and sell it on eBay, but I wasn't going to wait in line for two days.

I might go tomorrow after work to the local Wal-Mart and see how many people are in line for the Wii.

I don't think there will be quite as much demand for those.

Talking OMG, John Edwards implicated in PlayStation Gate!

Wal-Mart accuses ex-senator of cutting in line for PS3
POSTED: 11:19 a.m. EST, November 17, 2006

(AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday that a staff member for former Sen. John Edwards -- a vocal critic of the retailer -- asked his local Wal-Mart store for help in getting the potential 2008 presidential candidate a Sony PlayStation 3. Edwards said a volunteer did so by mistake.

Edwards said that the volunteer "feels terrible" about seeking the game unit at Wal-Mart a day after his boss criticized the company, saying it doesn't treat its employees fairly.

"My wife, Elizabeth, wanted to get a PlayStation 3 for my young children. She mentioned it in front of one of my staff people," Edwards said. "That staff person mentioned it in front of a volunteer who said he would make an effort to get one. He was making an effort to go get one for himself.

"Elizabeth and I knew nothing about this. He feels terrible about this. He made a mistake, and he knows he should not have used my name," Edwards said.

Edwards said the volunteer was "a young kid" unaware of what he called flawed Wal-Mart policies. He called the Wal-Mart statement an effort to divert attention from its own problems.

After Wal-Mart this summer hired Edelman executive Leslie Dach as its public relations director and put him on the company's executive team, analysts said the retailer would likely become more aggressive toward its critics.

Wal-Mart had noted in a news release Thursday that on the same day Edwards was criticizing the company in a conference call with union-backed activists, the volunteer staff member had asked a Raleigh, North Carolina, electronics department manager to obtain a PS3 for the ex-senator's family.

From Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, company spokesman David Tovar said the person who called left a voicemail at the Raleigh store and identified himself as an Edwards staff member. When the manager returned the call, the staff member again identified himself as working for Edwards, and Wal-Mart said it confirmed that with Edwards' office.

The retailer's news release accused Edwards of not wanting to wait his turn.

"While the rest of America's working families are waiting patiently in line, Senator Edwards wants to cut to the front," the Wal-Mart statement said. The PlayStation 3 console is set to go on sale Friday.

Edwards, the Democrats' vice presidential candidate in 2004, spoke Wednesday to supporters of union-backed WakeUpWalMart.com on a conference call launching the group's holiday season campaign to pressure Wal-Mart for better labor standards.

In the call, he repeated a story about his son Jack disapproving of a classmate buying sneakers at Wal-Mart. "If a 6-year-old can figure it out, America can definitely figure this out," Edwards said.

Previously, Edwards has appeared at WakeUpWalMart rallies.

Perhaps but Patty doesn't do grass and other types of fauna, real or fake.
She only plays Wimbledon because, well... her husband can be very convincing.

Re: Robbers prey on PlayStation 3 buyers

people really are stupid.

1- ALL stores that allow people to wait overnight for anything should have security.
2- everyone knows the first batch of ps3 will be filled with problems just like the first batch of ps1,ps2's and psp's.
3- its just a game box. if people want shiny graphics the xbox360 has been out for a year now.
4- thats why they invented pre orders.

5- or if good planning is too hard for people, why not just wait a week?

i stayed up overnight outside the nintendo world store for a chance to meet THE Miyamoto (the creator of mario, donkey kong, zelda and more).

nintendo fanboys are VERY civilized, we might be dorks but we are civilized dorks.

this is a picture from that night

by the next morning of the line went around 3 entire city blocks. but you know, nintendo gave us (the overnighters) free pizza, hot chocolate, and there were a few security guards. it was a nice event everyone had a good time. (the guy who was first in line had been waiting for 2 days ) i was in the first 200 hundred online so i got to meet miyamoto-sama and introduce myself and i got two autographs.

i want to get a nintendo wii, but i dont know where i will get it from. there will be no shortage though, and nintendo is opening up the sore early monday morning (the day after release) so that adults only get can systems for 6am to 9am on their way to work. they will have free coffee, tea and like donuts. that sounds like fun. a kid-free morning at nintendo

There were long lines for pre-orders as well, and not all of them were filled.

There won't be more in a week.

thats what sony is saying, but its artificial demand, most of the people dont even want those ps3 they are just putting them on ebay.

21,638 ps3s on ebay and the VAST majority of them have no bids. the only person i know who got a ps3 (and most of the people i know play games, my sister needs to buy her own DS and stop using mine), doesnt even want it. she is trying to sell it on ebay for $1,000plus. and thats what most of these ebay auctions are.

definitely some of those ps3s will sell for $1000plus but like the gmail demand of 2004 after a while there will be hundreds of ps3s on ebay with no bidders

Let them exhaust themselves over the silly PS3. All I want is a Wii.

yeah, i was going to get a wii, but i looks like all the games are mediocre to good and i only like to pay full $50 for near perfect games. i will just wait till its in pink or till super smash brothers brawl is out whichever comes first.

but hey at 25% off i would get one too. is this a public sale or a private offer that you are getting?
