Porn Flourishes In Old Taliban Heartland

Porn flourishes in Taliban heartlandBy Terry Friel in Kandahar

ON the television screen, the two naked young women writhe together to the sounds of Hotel California as the occasional crackle of gunfire punctuates the Afghan night.

Several overseas phone numbers offer an intimate chat with the ladies, or some of their equally outgoing friends.

The heaviest fighting in five years has slowed reconstruction to a crawl in the deserts and oases of Kandahar, where the strict Islamist Taliban movement began in 1994, but pornography, opium and illegal alcohol are flourishing, officials say.

At least one satellite operator offers foreign channels such as eurotictv, allsex, 247Sex and transex, along with the God Channel and the Church, Miracle and Hope channels.

In a country where converting to Christianity from Islam carries the death penalty, the Christian channels are just as offensive to some as the pornography, although not as popular.

"Pornography is a problem," admits new provincial police chief General Asmatullah Alizai. "According to our Islamic rules and beliefs, people cannot accept this kind of thing.

"I don't want people to see this kind of film."

General Alizai believes pornography, drugs and alcohol, especially in a traditionalist city such as Kandahar underlines the need for President Hamid Karzai's plan to re-establish the Taliban's department for the prevention of vice and the promotion of virtue, better known as the religious police.

"We should use any means possible," he says.

Under the Taliban's rule from 1996 to 2001, when their hardline Islamist government was ousted by a US-led coalition, music and film were banned and women and girls often beaten if they ventured outside the home alone or unveiled.

All women in Afghanistan wear a headscarf or an all-covering burqa and they can be shunned by their community for simply appearing on television, even with their head covered.

Porn arrived in Kandahar as soon as the Taliban left, but was generally confined to backrooms of teahouses.

Now, it's increasingly there for anyone with the right satellite subscription or a couple of dollars for a VCD. So far, only limited attempts have been made to block some providers.

Explicit VCDs smuggled mainly from Pakistan but also from India are on sale on the streets for a few dollars each, but vendors are secretive and wary.

Sellers at the crowded VCD and CD market, where tunes from blaring Bollywood hits clash with traditional Persian and Pakistani instrumentals, don't like to discuss the trade.

"They come from Pakistan," says Farid Achmad, firmly insisting virtually all his wares go on to neighbouring Iran to the west.

"They are banned. The Government would not let you sell anything like this," he says uncomfortably, sipping a green tea.

Porn's growing popularity and availability comes as the Taliban re-exert their influence across the country, especially in Kandahar and other southern provinces.

More people are turning to the insurgents, partly out of frustration at the lack of jobs and a non-drugs economy, partly for money and partly because in some areas the group imposes a rough order where the Government cannot, complete with their own courts.

The Islamist hardliners are also trying to reimpose some of their old strictures, burning schools that admit girls and executing their teachers in front of students.

Head of Kandahar's provincial women's affairs department, 34-year-old Rona Trena, says pornography is a problem, but one largely confined to a small number of young men.

"It's not a good habit to have," she says. "But it's in the shops and some of these young men are watching it."

Maybe they can finally arrive in at least the 18th century...

Re: Porn Flourishes In Old Taliban Heartland

When Bush finishes his Presidency, people will remember it for getting rid of the Taliban. These timid reforms shows what a good thing it was to get rid of that stone age regime. A small step forward is better than no step. Even Iraq will be remembred as a success because Iran will be getting the nuke and so would Saddam if he had his way. Right now the Iraqis are killing themselves instead of going after their neighbors. Everyone was predicting a fundemetalist shiite regime if Saddam was removed. But not only that is not the case, what can be seen is that sunni arabs are more of a nuisance than the shiite arabs. The Kurds region has been surprisingly stable and is viewed as a success story.

Re: Porn Flourishes In Old Taliban Heartland

Slicing off heads or porn. Killing rape victims or porn. Burning
people alive or porn. I don't know, porn seems a relatively peaceful
way to deal with pent up Islamic fanatics. If that's what it takes.

Sorry, I doubt porn didn't exist there before the Taliban fell.
I doubt prostitution didn't exist either. I don't buy their
virtuous declarations, who the heck knows what old Bin Laden
is doing in those caves w/ his buddies.

Afghanistan is still a nation better off today than before the war.

I know that pains many on the right.

East Timor is having massive problems and bloodshed, and Clinton
declared that battleground a victory years ago.

Even the NY Times reported after the election (of course, afterwards)
that over 75% of Afghanistan is up and running and relatively free
of insurgent attacks, and had been for a long time. Also, that most
Afghans like their new democracy, and think they are better off than
before.

They just didn't report that much before we voted.

The entire history of Afghanistan is one of war and attacks and
rebellion and bloodshed. It's not exactly a new thing to this nation.

It will always have a level of problems and violence and bloodshed,
much like Turkey and India and Russia does today. It will go on
and be a nation though.

Recall the before war fears were that it would be a Russia re-do...
years w/o achievement, and lots of death, predictions were for
heavy American losses.

That silly Rumsfeld did in fact have and implement a successful
military plan in Afghanistan. Reports before the war in Iraq were
upwards of 50,000 to 100,000 American dead soldiers would result
from invading and taking care of Iraq
.... 3 1/2 years into it, we haven't even hit 3,000.
That's an amazing statistic, and a tribute to how good they have
done. Too bad they don't get any credit for any of it. All they
get is attacked by our press and our Democrats and the nations
that the USA no matter what.

The Kurds have been doing better after the 1st golf war and has nothing to do with W. They are not out of the woods yet either because if they become independent Turkey will not be happy and who knows how that will turn out. Not even W is giving his "happy" talks anymore therfore you are left with Rumy and Chaney.

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the SILENCE OF OUR FRIENDS. MLK

It is also thanks to Clinton who instored a no fly zone. U.S. policy has indeed helped Kurdistan get it de facto independance. Who is then responsible, the arabs? Thanks to people like W, the arabization of the kurdish region is being reversed. Now the Kurds will be able to get back regions that are out of their possession. There will even be a referendum in late 2007 on whether Kirkurk (which used to be theirs and which has oil) should join Kurdistan autonomous region. Looks like that will be the case.

Turkey won't do anything. Already trade is booming beween Kurdish region and Turkey. They will have same relationship as Taiwan and China. The latter has not invaded or attacked Taiwan. So there will be a cold war mentality but no more. Turkey is a responsible democratic society. It knows not to antagonize the int. community and does not want U.S. and EU to be hostile to it.

Long live Kurdistan!
