Save The Environment

save the environment:

AS environmental issues are the talk of the town Down Under, I thought we could start a thread in which we can share ideas on how to do our bit to save the environment.

I'll kick it off, use green bags instead of plastic bags when shopping, create a compost bin/garden and place all ur food scraps there and NOT in the bin.

come on guys, get behind this cause!

Re: Save The Environment

My carbon footprint is pretty good, given that I don't drive a huge amount and I recycle.

However, I still feel that it is too late, and we are all going to die horribly.

Oh, so you recycle now.

And I agree.

Women's tennis sucks.

A notion which will give many the excuse or insentive
to say "what the hell" and do whatever regardless.

No, your children or children's children will
bear the major brunt of the damage done
and die the more horrific deaths.

Re: Save The Environment

Here are some things I (we) already do:

1. i have a water jug, so i dont use many disposal cups
2. i have no car and dont want one. I take the train when i travel
in europe instead of renting a car - for safety reasons but also environmental.
2a. When I do drive (which is rare) i dont speed. I dont excellerate quickly, it wastes gas
3. We will purchase a dishwasher when we can afford it
4. We buy only fresh fish - frozen fish is a no no
5. I don't go washing a semi-clean tshirt if it is the weekend, and i use my jeans several times B4 washing - yes it seems Americans overwash so ive adapted to european standards
6. I always put my trash in the garbage can
7. I have a sticker on my mailbox to ward of solicitations
8. Occasionally use scrap paper instead of new paper
9. I recycle paper clips, binder clips and rubber bands
10. dont overuse dishsoap
11. I take superfast showers. I turn off the water while i use the soap - Oh and since i shave my head with a razor, i dont use shampoo!
12. oh and of course, we recycle paper, glass and plastic as we are expected to in our town.
13. oh and the biggie is we dont have AC - and when i lived in NYC i only used the AC when it was like 90 and way too hot to sleep at night, otherwise, i dont mind sweating.

That's about all i can think of. Since i use public transport to go to work, dont own a car and do all the other stuff, i already know im way over on the good environmental side. The only thing i really can do is buy a dishwasher and that's in the works in the next couple of years.

Actually, my selflessness knows no bounds, as I won't have children.

And frankly, individuals can only do so much. The ones that recycle, don't drive, are energy efficient etc. do so already, and those that say "what the hell" continue to do so, and individual changes either way are unlikely to alter the current inertia. The environment can only be "saved" when there is a concerted, international effort at a governmental level to reduce emissions caused by factories and energy production, and from aviation/transport. All industries that are actively being encouraged, particularly in newly industrialising countries and the US, and also in the EU as a whole.

So when people see their governments actively pumping out more carbon dioxide whilst raking in the profits from it, who can blame those that say "what the hell" and carry on regardless?

As opposed to the environmentally unsound method of tossing it onto a pile in your living room?

Re: Save The Environment

excellent thread! will make a list of the few things I do on a daily basis

I am really good at recycling. On Monday morning I cycle to work, and every other day of the week I re-cycle the exact same route!

Re: Save The Environment

you know one funny thing I do? is when I wash lettuce or some fruits, I do that in a bucket of water (rather than under a running tap) and when I've finished, I go and use that water to water the plants
We do recycle glass/paper/cardboard/aluminium foil/solid plastic as well here . Also waiting for a composter supposably the city council was gonna give everyone here, but still waiting

Re: Save The Environment

bump.

Make a conscious effort to save water. Do u really need to water the garden or take a 10 min shower?

What i mean is that I don't throw candy wrappers on the ground and other small pieces of litter either. What i do in my living room is my own business.
