'Jesus Camp' shuts down

'Jesus Camp' shuts down
November 9, 2006
The evangelical christian summer camp "Kids on Fire " featured in the documentary Jesus Camp will shut down for several years due to negative reactions to the film, negative e-mails, phone calls and letters. Many accuse camp leader Becky Fischer of "brainwashing" the children.

The documentary showed camp leader Becky Fischer acting as a "drill instructor" for young children preparing themselves for spiritual and political warfare. Fisher makes explicit comparisons between her camp and Islamist 'jihad training camps'. It also shows children praying before a photograph of President Bush.

The film included scenes with disgraced preacher Ted Haggard, who resigned his leadership of the National Association of Evangelicals after he was accused of having sex with a male prostitute and using methamphetamine.

Haggard has criticized the film as mocking the evangelical movement and for using his statement that “If the Evangelicals vote, they determine the election.” The film makers responded that "Pastor Haggard is the only person in Jesus Camp who has a problem with how he was portrayed" and stated that they had been careful to avoid his more inflammatory and divisive comments.

Whilst I'm happy that this thing is shut down and hopefully for good, we must also remember that similar camps are happening with other religions in other parts of the world. The only difference is that we don't see about it in movies and people can't complain and harass to them.

So those people who are responsible for bringing this thing down, well done but your job is only half done.

GOOD! I so want to smack the leader of this camp. She fails to realize that she is doing more harm than good to these unsuspecting kids UGH.

Re: 'Jesus Camp' shuts down

I'm sort of torn on this one. I'm glad it shut down because of who was leading it, but kids still need Jesus. We just have to make sure our leaders have the right intentions and are living their lives right. You can't tell other people that they can't do certain things when you're doing every wrong thing too. There has to be a consistency.

All children really need are good role models in their life, whether that's one or two parents who can provide a stable environment where they can develop notions of right/wrong and be productive.

If it makes you feel any better, I doubt they're now going to Satan Camp instead.

I wonder if some of the "negative" reaction came from some of the kid's parents themselves.

They do? There seems ample evidence that in fact, children can be brought up as sane, rational, well-rounded individuals within a completely non-religious context. So it implies that children don't need Jesus, rather that other people find it comforting to think that.

Some are born with Jesus, some achieve Jesus, but the vast majority have Jesus thrust upon them.
