Roarke, I've been trying to answer this question for my kids for over 12 years!!
And I still
can't find a white person who will answer this.
I don't know what the hell it is, [maybe out of fear or jealous...] but I find that whites really do find us intimidating to a great extent. Even some of the teachers I help out everyday STILL find me intimidating. WTF?!
*note: not all do, but my God, most for sure.*
One of those unanswerable paradoxes of life I suppose.
Maybe some kind Caucasian poster will / can find it in his/her heart to answer your questions.
although, what i would say to your question, is that what i have done in my life is too look at those who are NOT this way, those whites who are anti-racist what has made them that way, what steps did they take.?
in my experience, anti-racist functioning can be learned, but the white people who are examples to me for what solid compassion and anti-racist means didnt learn it. these are people who see race, and also have seen since they were little that blacks get treated different and its not fair and they dont like it. thats it. its that basic understanding that while two beings might look different, the way they should be treated for in the same situation for doing the same thing should be the same.
when you look, you will see that people who are anti-racist, are also anti-sexist, anti-homophobic and so on. because while the players might be different to the general rule (while two beings might look different, the way they should be treated for in the same situation for doing the same thing should be the same) still applies.
so then for me its easy to see why some people are so racist, sexist, ect. for them the two beings might be the same but they will find ANY justification to show that they SHOULD be treated differently for the same action in the same situation. this not only enables them to be racist, it enables any and every kind of ism one can think of. this is why the likes of Selesfan70 can so easily be racist gays. this is why they can easily support things that are so blatantly racist. this is why the firefighters that did this are likely to also treat women and gays as being sub-human or beneath them.
the anti-racist person - two beings might be different in looks but if they are in the same situation and got to this path in the same way they should be treated the same.
the racist person - the beings might be different in looks, which instantly means is one somehow in someway better or worse than the other in some way thus they should be treated differently.
RVD tell me what you think of this analysis and ask any questions you have.
