Candid Discussion About Immigration

In the current immigration debate, all of the participants, including callers, letter or email writers, always claim that their parents learned then spoke English when they emigrate it to the US.

However, I have seen TV documentaries on Italian and Jewish immigrants, where it was mentioned that they had newspapers in Italian and Yiddish respectively, catering to the new immigrant population, who could not read or speak English.
And these newspapers not only include local news of the city and neighborhood they live in, but also news from the "old" country.

My question is for for Americans of first generation and beyond, what did your parents or grand parents tell you about this topic?
Did they really learn and speak English as quickly as it is widely believed in today's immigration debate?

Please discuss candidly.

Actually a very popular argument in cultural studies now is that the more open a society is to immigrants and multiculturalism (i.e., allows foreign language newspapers etc. etc.) the quicker immigrants will pick up aspects of the host culture.
