Most Essential 20th Century Invention that has blossomed in the 21st Century

cell phone
While cell phone purchases began rising dramatically in the mid to late 1990s, cell phones didn't start becoming an integral part of most everyone's life style until the 21st century. Now adorned with features from mp3s as ringtones to video camera capabilities, cell phones are seen and used everywhere to occupy one's mind.

-----

sildenafil citrate
Most commonly known through the name Viagra, the drug was first patented in 1996. Sales began to skyrocket at the very very end of the 90s and use has become very common. Everyone can have sex now even if they aren't horny.

-----

digital audio players
Invented in 1998, mp3, hard drive, and flash-based players really started to blossom after music became readily available on the internet. The IPod has become the major player in the United States. Problems with precursors, including the walkman and CD Player, were that they were too clunky and sensitive to movement. Now music can be heard in peace not just in the classroom but while working out or on a rickety old bus!

-----

internet
you're on it right now.

-----

species cloning
Though the first species cloned was a tadpole in 1952, there wasn't much progress for most of the remainder of the 20th century partially due to ethical issues. However, after the most infamous cloning, the sheep, Dolly, in 1997, the amount of species cloned after the 20th century exploded with 21 species cloned in the 21st century so far.

-----

hybrid vehicles
Though this is actually a 19th century invention, invented in 1898, the 1st hybrid vehicle, the Ferdinand Porsche, was not first presented to the mass public until 1900 Paris World Exhibition. Electric cars and hybrid vehicles did not see much progress for most of the 20th century due to the success of other car types. However, after the Clinton administration and Europe pushed to find cleaner vehicles and the availability of the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius in the 90s, hybrid car designs became popping up. Sales and demand for these cars grow even more as the price of gasoline continues to escalate.

-----

wireless networking
The market for wireless local area networks has increased 5fold in recent years. Protocol IEEE 802.16, the standard for wireless metropolitan area networks was created late in 2001. Wireless networks have dramatically increased the availability and the demand for mobile technology, as it has become significantly easier to access the internet and share information without the hassle of wires. Don't forget about personal wireless networks which are commonly found in homes and allow you to take your computer to the bathroom while you shit.

-----

european union
according to wikipedia.org, "The European Union was established under that name in 1992 by the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht Treaty). However, many aspects of the Union existed before that date through a series of predecessor relationships, dating back to 1951." It consists of 25 nations and arguably, has increased solidarity within the region. Because of the union, many types of policies (economic, foreign, security, etc.) that used to be different amongst the nations have been or will be brought into one common policy. The euro was "launched as physical coins and banknotes in 2002," affecting markets all over the world. Older currency of certain european countries began losing their value in the 21st century partially or completely. With the creation of the African Union in 2002, the prevalence of the European Union as a new emerging "superpower" cannot be ignored.

-----

laptops/notebooks
In 1983, the Gavilan SC became "the first ever marketed 'laptop' " Perhaps you are using one right now, but if you aren't, chances are you'd be more likely to purchase one rather than a desktop in the future. In 2005, laptops outsold desktops for the first time in history.

any other ideas?
