It was probably a good movie if you haven't read the book...but since the book is one of my favorites I was dissapointed. I thought it focused WAY too much on the cinematography and not enough on the storyline. Like, for instance, in the book, the doctor was extremely methodical in a way when it came to taking her virginity...he even kept the blood in a little tube, for his collection. The movie breezed over that part which I thought was very important for the watchers to grasp the actual life of these girls.

I agree that the book was better, the book is always better than the movie.
The books will always be better than the movies themselves, and ofcorse some people might feel a bit dissapointed or offended that the actors where chinese.

But I tought the movie was beautiful, it was so nicely done, I fell in love with Chiyo/Sayuri, and those big blue eyes, and ofcorse the Chairman.
Was a great movie wheter it was the book or the movie both almost brought me to tears and it has to be quite a strong movie to do that or book.

The film was fantastic but I agree that the book was better in many regards. It would've been sensational had it been based completely on the book. The storyline is probably my favourite ever and it was a beautiful insight into the life of a geisha. I didn't have a problem with the Chinese act(ors)resses, especially with Sayuri's part.

It's the kind of movie I can watch again and again and again and never get sick of.

The movie was okay but I LOVED the book. And yes, most of the female characters in the movie are played by Chinese actresses (although Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian I think) and that's kind of distracting.

Well, I loved Gong Li's performance, I really thought it deserved an Oscar, and at the very least an Oscar nomination.

I personally enjoyed the book more, as people usually do. As much Chinese pride I have, I don't think Zhang Ziyi did that great of a job.... As for Michelle Yeoh, Mameha's character is so refined and probably didn't really allow Michelle Yeoh to show anything impressive...

But once again, Gong Li just stole the show.

well first when I heard it was coming out on film, I decided to read the book first. I loved the book, one of my all time favourites but I then missed the film in the cinema So I bought it on DVD. I love it and can watch it again and again, but I don't think it can get anywhere near the book. I know it would have been a lot longer if they copied the book, but there were some nice touches to the book I liked ie, Hatsumomo bribing the teahouse people to call everytime Mameha and Sayuri arrived and then Hatsumomo and Pumpkin would follow them, which weren't in the film and I enjoy small little things like that. Still, I really enjoyed the book and film

Get over it .... A movie isn't good or bad based on if the actors are a certain race. It is an American movie made for American audiences, with actors who can play the roles who Americans will recognize.
Would I have preferred Japanese actors to play the two main roles? At first I said yes, however I was more than satisfied with Gong Li & Ziyi Zhangs performances.

That being said, of the 7 main characters, 4 actually were played by Japanese actors. Ken Watanabe was the Male lead, he is Japanese. The actors playing Mother, Pumpkin, Nobu & even Chiyo (even though she isn't considered a main) were all Japanese.

ETA: I voted that I loved it

I have to say though, the girl who played Hatsumomo did very well.
