You're not allowed to use a tee after the first shot. If it's a short hole, you wouldn't use a wood or a driver to tee off. Par is what the average good golfer should hit to get into the hole from teeing off. Par 3 means you do it in 3 shots, a short hole. Par 5 is a long hole. They only have Par 3, 4, and 5. The place you hit it if you're lucky is the fairway, which is between were you tee off the green, where the hole is.
Teeing off from a short hole, or when you're hitting your second shot, etc., on the hole, you use an "iron." Irons run 1-9, but most people don't use a 1-2 irons and most club sets don't come with those. The further you are from the hole, the lower the iron you use. As you get closer to the hole (which is on the green), you use the higher numbered irons. If you get into a sand trap, you use another club called the sand-wedge or like any wedge will do to get out. If you don't have any kind of wedge, use the 8 or 9 iron. Once you get onto the green, you use the putter to hit the ball into the hole.
It takes a lot of practice. If you've never played, you will have problems making clean contact with the ball with your swing and it will look horrible. Clubs today are a lot easier to hit and forgive a lot more, but if you're never played, that really won't help. Clubs from 30 years ago (like I used to play with) had no room for error, maybe like tennis racquets today.
I'd fess up before you go out that you've never played, because you will not be able to fake it. If you insist, go to a driving range beforehand and hit a bunch of balls to at least get some feel for the clubs so it won't be a total disaster.
Thanks Helen, I think I will fess up but at least now I have some background knowlegde. Me and a couple of the other girls are going to a driving range (we're all in the same boat and we don't want to look bad in front of the guys)
I have made a vow though, I'm going to spend this summer getting really good at it!
