Tips on photoshopping/desktop artwork design

I've been wanting to make my own desktop wallpaper for some time now, been collecting various pictures etc to add to it but have absolutely no idea how to actually go about merging them all into one cool looking desktop wallpaper. Does anyone have any tips on what program is best to use (preferably a free one that's easy to download! ) and how to go about making one myself?

Cheers for any suggestions

Well, it's kind of a steep learning curve, to go from having no idea to making a cool-looking background. Basically, the best programs are Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop, neither of them are free, and you will need to master many basic skills like resizing, cropping, colour correcting, working with layers and using brushes, before you stand any chance of creating non-ugly images. There are probably some decent tutorials on the web though, if you can actually get hold of the program you want to use.
