Federal Source to ABC News: We Know Who You're Calling
May 15, 2006 10:33 AM

Brian Ross and Richard Esposito Report:

A senior federal law enforcement official tells ABC News the government is tracking the phone numbers we call in an effort to root out confidential sources.

"It's time for you to get some new cell phones, quick," the source told us in an in-person conversation.

ABC News does not know how the government determined who we are calling, or whether our phone records were provided to the government as part of the recently-disclosed NSA collection of domestic phone calls.

Other sources have told us that phone calls and contacts by reporters for ABC News, along with the New York Times and the Washington Post, are being examined as part of a widespread CIA leak investigation.

One former official was asked to sign a document stating he was not a confidential source for New York Times reporter James Risen.

Our reports on the CIA's secret prisons in Romania and Poland were known to have upset CIA officials.

People questioned by the FBI about leaks of intelligence information say the CIA was also disturbed by ABC News reports that revealed the use of CIA predator missiles inside Pakistan.

Under Bush Administration guidelines, it is not considered illegal for the government to keep track of numbers dialed by phone customers.

The official who warned ABC News said there was no indication our phones were being tapped so the content of the conversation could be recorded.

A pattern of phone calls from a reporter, however, could provide valuable clues for leak investigators.

This sounds horrible, but, really, I don't care. I don't call anyone interesting and we discuss nothing interesting.

Who cares? People need to stop leaking shit that doesn't need to be. I'm tired of all these blabbermouths. If they're gonna spill secrets to the media who knows who else they have told.

Who cares? Are you serious? It is our job as citizens of this nation to question the legality of this issue. It's fine if you want waive your rights to privacy to the current administration, but you do not speak for everybody.

Echelon Project.
Been going on for decades.

Clinton White House broadened the powers
of Echelon. The NSA has been listening and
watching you and linking you for decades,
and high technology allows them to do it more
and more.

60 Minutes and Steve Kroft did a story on this
in 1999, how the Clinton Administration was
listening to your calls, knew what you sent by
fax, and what you watched on tv. All for
national security.

Didn't hear much about that? I wonder why.

Without a war, or terrorist attacks on a larger scale
than the WTC in 1993 (remember, we were attacked
in 93' as well as 2001 in NYC), Clinton & Gore were
eavesdropping, tracking, and wiretapping away.

The silence from the liberal media tells me a lot.

The hype of the liberal media today, tells me a lot.

Congressman Barr then was against it, he still is, with
the ACLU I believe. He's consistent I guess.

The NSA is not listening to your calls. It is tracking
the data base information the phone companies
voluntarily gave it to review. Less than credit card
companies and mail order catalogs do, for a price.
Without your approval. Less than banks do to get
your next loan.

The NY Times revealed this matter in December. Not
a new 'leak', just another one by disgruntled CIA personnel who preferred Clinton or Carter, and are doing all they
can to undermind a sitting president doing his job.

It's to undermind the CIA Director hearings coming up.
Very convenient. Old story, leaked in a new way to set
up opposition. It's good old dirty politics, not much else.

Insta-polls. All last week said people supported the general
idea of data base reviews and collections. USA Today today
tries to say most are against it, until you read the rest
of the poll results...people favor national security over
personal information rights to fight terrorism.

Qwest declined. Qwest owner is under indictment for
non-related SEC violations, and has been for years
in a lot of legal trouble w/the feds.

In 2006, what exactly is free from tapping or following
by anyone? Not much. Strangers can get your entire
life on line for a price. You'd never know. Anyone can
get your credit report, your rent history, your property
tax info, follow your supermarket discount card history.
Scary stuff. Anyone can track your posting and internet
searches. It's not hard to do.

I get more angry knowing banks and credit unions and
schools sell information we give them for profit. I get
more angry knowing anyone can buy a complete profile
on me online, and I'll never know about it.

Well, the electorate cares. Which is why you are likely to see a swing to the left after the mid-term elections this fall. I'm of the opinion that some parts of our government are taking advantage of the Patriot Act for their own personal benefit. Power ultimately corrupts.
