compulsive liars

I'm doing some research on this, and thought I'd post a thread...

Does anyone know a compulsive liar?

Anyone a compulsive liar themselves? Any stories to tell?

I do know a comulsive lair.

He lies about everything! Even the most
insignificant thing for no apparent reason
other than for the attention.

No, of course not, but compulsive lying is entirely different from lying occasionally.

I know someone that does just that, it's as if he cannot help it. It's actually very difficult to know how to deal with it, because you know when he is doing it, and he knows that you know when he does it. It helps to look at it more as an affliction, because he probably hates it about himself, and it's easier to empathise with an 'illness' per se, however psychological it is. And every time that I've confronted him about it he gets very defensive and it only leads to bad feeling. He's clearly got self-confidence issues, and it means that he lies about himself to make himself feel better, and to impress others so that he feels better about himself. There is no need for it, and we've told him, but he just denies it blindly.

I just tend to let him get on with it now, and it's a shame because we were once really good friends.

I know 3! I've had troubles with two of them, but I was wise to the 3rd, we get along fine now, I just assume that every single word they say is a lie, nod, smile, and keep them at arms length.

The Strange Suissie's husband, who "rescued her" from the "other Rainer" (aka the orange juice guru) back in '99.

I sometimes lie accidentally, but only when I feel people are being rude and asking nosey questions. I wouldn't call it compulsive. But I reckon I've told way more of these lies than pre-planned lies.

I do know some people who invented whole fake stories just to make themselves seem more interesting. Those people are weird, and scare me.

That's exactly like the one I know. She lies about the dumbest stuff for no reason at all. All the time, for no reason.

I had a very close friend like that. I think he's narcissistic and I think that causes him to lie like that too. Anyway, needless to say, we are no longer friends. I had the same problem with him getting defensive about me confronting him about the lies. I told him that when he lies like that, everyone knows he's lying and its embarrassing, but he couldn't see it or didn't want to. It's very sad.

I saw this once on the Oprah show. This woman eventually ended up in jail! Very sad. Here's the link to that episode (it has a video clip) maybe it can tell you more about this topic. http://www.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/...20050301.jhtml
