Unhappy SORAYA - Cancer claims Latin singer

Cancer claims Latin singer
Colombian-American singer-songwriter Soraya died Wednesday after an arduous public five-year battle with breast cancer. She was 37.
A spokeswoman for her record label, EMI Latino, said she died in a Miami hospital. No other details were available.
Born in New Jersey to Colombian parents, Soraya was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2000. She made as much of a name for herself for her struggle with the disease, and for her efforts to persuade the Hispanic community to confront what was often a hidden killer, as she did for her graceful, passionate pop-rock music.
Just last September, Soraya was urging women to seek early treatment as part of her yearly efforts on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, for which she was a spokeswoman.
''I can be their voice,'' she said of women with breast cancer.
Soraya lost her mother, her grandmother and her aunt to the disease that took her life.
News agencies in Colombia reported that Soraya's family had not revealed that her condition had worsened. In Bogotá, Soraya's aunt, Sonia de Siberio, said Wednesday that she had expected her niece's passing for days.

`DRIVEN BY LIFE'
Soraya's death came as a shock to the Latin music and entertainment world, which buzzed with the news by midday Wednesday. Colleagues mourned a woman they said had a rare gift for both music and fighting for others.
''She was just so driven by life,'' said Sebastian Krys, who produced Soraya's last album, El Otro Lado de Mi (My Other Side), last year. ``She used every opportunity she had to turn her forum into helping others. And it came from such a pure place. I hope that we can keep her mission alive.''
''My journey today is not easy, but I want you to know that your unconditional support has always been in my heart,'' Soraya said in a letter on her website thanking fans for their support. ``As I said before, I've completed my dream and day to day I can't ask for more.''
Her dream was deferred a bit when she took time away from developing her career to take care of her mother, who died in August 1992, days before Hurricane Andrew smashed South Florida.
''We didn't even realize a hurricane was going on, we were so wrapped up in everything,'' Soraya said in a 1996 interview with The Miami Herald. Soraya soon would pay tribute to her mother's memory via the title track of her 1996 English-language debut album, On Nights Like This:
Sometimes it swallows me this space I feel inside / But I think of how strong you were and it helps me get by.
''When I first wrote that song, I wrote it as a personal release, something to help me understand what was going on,'' Soraya said. ``It turned into a positive song for me. . . . When people hear it and they have lost somebody and they listen to what I'm singing, they get filled with the same inspiration.''

HER 'GIFT' AND `PASSION'
Such was her legacy, music industry insiders say.
''Her gift was her music and her message and her sincerity in expressing her feelings and her passion for life, and her passion to help people,'' said Jorge Pino, former president of EMI Latino, who oversaw the release of her last two albums.
Soraya had released four successful albums before her own cancer diagnosis. In 2003, she came back with Soraya, which won a Latin Grammy for best singer-songwriter album. One of her biggest hits from that record was Por Ser Quien Soy (No One Else), which became an anthem for breast-cancer survivors.
''Her honesty and dedication, along with her incredible drive for life and her ability to concentrate on what really matters, has truly changed my life forever,'' Joyce Fleming, Soraya's manager, said in a statement. ``We appreciate the opportunity to have learned from her wisdom and allowed it to enrich our lives.''
El Nuevo Herald, Miami Herald staff writer Howard Cohen and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I was very sad when I heard about this yesterday morning. When she knew her time in this world was coming to an end, she wrote a very gut wrenching and emotional goodbye letter to her fans, which can be read on her website.

"Child, you really think you're gonna win Roland Garros
with Vera in the draw?"

Yes...

STAY AWHILE
as they were being said i wished those words were
dead they grow and grow and grow in our heads
they linger, linger and haunt us days on end

it was all in a moment of anger these daggers that i threw
they're still deeply embedded into you
i swear i fear there's nothing i can do

stay a while young is the night
give me a chance to set things right
don't you throw away those years of love
over one night when the love went wrong
stay a while young is the night
give me a chance to set things right
don't you throw away those years of love
over one night when the love went wrong
over one night when the love went wrong

i can see it in your eyes in the way you look at me
mistrust has now replaced intimacy
i feel you drifting drifting far away from me

stay a while young is the night
give me a chance to set things right
don't you throw away those years of love
over one night when the love went wrong
over one night when the love went wrong

i swear, i will fight this
i vow not to lose
i'll be damned if this destroys us
i'll be damned if i lose you

stay a while young is the night
give me a chance to set things right
don't you throw away those years of love
over one night when the love went wrong
stay a while young is the night
give me a chance to set things right
don't you throw away those years of love
over one night when the love went wrong
over one night when the love went wrong

I don't know her but I'm sure she was talented RIP
