How safe is downtown Los Angeles?

I think I will be in LA in July but probably won't be able to do much because I am going to be at a conference. However, is there anything in downtown L.A. to do? How far is like the Kodak theatre and all that stuff? Is it safe to walk around downtown La. I think the conference is at the Convention center and we'll bve staying at the Wilshire or the Sheraton downtown. Can anyone fill me in?

omg, don't go downtown after sunset. The place is deserted after work lets out and then the scum comes out.

Stick to the touristy areas. Avoid Sunset and Hollywood Blvds (past the chinese theater) after sundown

and avoid Compton, Inglewood, South Central, Watts, East Hollywood, and parts of Long Beach.

actually I think the closer to the coast you get the better East LA ...

For heaven's sake, don't go out alone if you're staying downtown. I'd stay locked up in my room at night or find something to do in the hotel.

Yeah, when people say they live "in LA," they usually mean in smaller cities AROUND L.A. As for L.A. itself and the downtown area, stay stay stay away and do everything in the daytime.

The Kodak and Mann's Chinese, etc are in Hollywood, which isn't downtown, but it's a close visit. If you driving, you can just head up the 101 N to H'wood or if you don't have a car, you can take the Metro up to Hollywood. I wouldn't advise it if you are alone after about 9-10 pm at night (as a woman anyway), but it's safe enough in a group. The main problem is the huge homeless population (largest in the world so I've heard) panhandling and sleeping it off on the Metro trains. Sounds fun, huh? Seriously, it is a fun place. The Kodak is in Hollywood and Highland, an outdoor shopping center. Mann's Chinese Theater is within walking distance. You should also try out Universal City (also off the 101 freeway) and the Santa Monica Pier area (W on the 10 freeway to the beach).

Just carry an anti-tank weapon, or something, and you'll probably be okay.

oh no. you need close combat weapons

Sally suggests a small fire arm ... like a Glock 9 mm or something similar...

or some sort of melee weapon

You guys are such drama queens. I love downtown LA. Just don't go walking around alone at night and you're fine. You shouldn't do that in downtown anywhere though. Common sense.

I've been in LA for almost 10 years and I've only been downtown after 9pm once. well other than making a quick bus/metro connection

I went to a party at an art gallery.

Other than us Hollywood types partying, there was nothing anywhere.

I figured you're more likely to die from loneliness than crime downtown.

For things to do, just hop on the "Red Line" and get off on Hollywood/Highland (they've done a lot to improve the area and it almost feels like "Hollywood" should).

Theres really nothing down there so why bother at all.

The woods are hopeless. Don't waste your time, they will be destroyed. So will the marsh. It is a losing game mankind has played for more than a century. Sadness is what you are, do not deny it. The universe is a lonely place, a painful place. This is what we can share between us, period.
